I'm not too proud to say I'll never get close to a Roger Smith. I did grow up in a place not too far from the Isle of Man, but that's as tenuous a link as one could make so I won't make it.
There is one way to tap into the watchmaking DNA that he represents. It runs from Abraham-Louis Breguet, to modern Breguet, to George Daniels, to Daniel Roth and to Roger Smith. Some of these offer attainable options. They are also a reminder that the great keepers of modern watchmaking were, to an important extent, English and French.
