Good question to ask. I'm inclined to believe that watchmaking is essentially about finding mechanical solutions, as explained to me by a few indie brands and watchmakers- Parts can be made, and watches can be serviced as long as the skills are still there. It'll obviously be more difficult if the brand is defunct, but that's similar to maintaining vintage pieces to an extent. We still have watchmakers specializing in restoring pocket watches from 200 years ago right... There're also brands that make it extra hard for outside watchmakers to service their pieces (personally I'm wary of those).
Getting an independent is more than just appreciating the fine mechanics. It's the romantic notion that one's buying into the passion, and even the artistic value of such creations. If you don't love the brand, no matter how much you like a particular model, don't buy it.
I'd suggest you speak to the brands you like to see if they have any long-term plans for maintenance and succession.
