Let’s go a little deeper into Pascal’s new watch

Please focus on the Geneva stripes.

There is a common misconception among collectors that Cotes de Geneve is an easy technique to master.  I beg to disagree.

In most examples today, striping is done with a very heavy hand, leaving optical distortions on the anglage in the form of stair-stepping.  Once you train your eye to see this defect, you cannot unsee it.  The technique of proper striping is largely a lost art.  Even those watchmakers who are currently lauded as master finishers (think of the top five) almost always fall short when it comes to striping.

Pascal Coyon is a notable exception.  I would dare say that his stripes approach perfection, without any of the bothersome distortions that are so commonly found at the interface between stripe and anglage.

To say that this is rare is a gross understatement.

Until this point, I believed that FPJ was the only one capable of making movements from gold.

I guess he was the first, and still best, but this PC piece is gorgeous.

Although his hand slips sometimes and he indents the edges where the stripes interface with the anglage. His indentations are pretty subtle. I think Daniel Roth with his JDN watch does a good job with the striping. It’s easier to say who does it poorly, b...
