David Walters The White

David Walter’s been working on his ‘The White’ a while,

'The White’ has been in the making since spring and is the culmination of a watch design David began in 2007, put aside because he was never happy with any dial he could find at that time. As a long time fan of his simply other-worldly clocks, I was waiting to see how his watch turned out. Just received this description and some photos that tell their own story!

David says he wanted ‘The White’ wrist watch to exhibit many of his horological features he’s used many years. He's especially proud of his new unique "Butterfly Snailing" on the ratchet and winding wheels. Large jewels are fitted that enhance the train and stand out against the rhodium plated scrolled and beveled plates, while the bridges are held with flame blued screws. David’s unusual semi-secret signature and number is only seen when the watch turns catching the light.

Number No.01 sits atop the balance cock foot.

David works using traditional hand methods, NO CNC, and this means he is able to customise each watch. So each watch, while always being an example of The White is going to be subtly different. Unusual feature on The White is David’s maker mark, a Swan visible near the crown wheel. The dial is engine turned, silver featuring a large sub-seconds dial, the flame blued steel hands are bespoke DW hands he’s employed many years and seen on many of his clocks. The dial design and Arabic numerals are David’s own, based on an Arabic font he created many years ago. The dial is expertly engine turned by Joshua Shapiro, Los Angeles, the USA.

There’s dial options of Roman numerals and classical Chinese script.

The steel case is 39mm dia x 11mm thick, with a domed sapphire crystal to the front and flat sapphire crystal to the screw down display back. David’s specially made a unique stainless steel crown for ‘The White’. The White is based on a vintage Omega 266 ebauche.

Comes fitted into a sliding, American White Oak presentation box made in Santa Barbara, California with handmade leather band.

Always liked David Walter's clocks for their technical nature, so I am glad to see he finally made an attempt on watches. Couple of observations. 1) Dial doesn't look very clean. Areas of brown stains or oxidation, especially the area around the edges of ...

think it's an easy fix though. Joshua Shapiro seems like a competent dial maker, am sure he can sort things out. Just clean the dial and then have a clear lacquer over it. I suspect the decision to use silver for the dial is for aesthetics. Silver is whit...
