Carl Suchy & Sohne - World Tour Tokyo Event @Austrian Embassy, Commercial Section

Jul 20, 2018,22:12 PM

As I reported previously, the Austrian-origin brand, Carl Suchy & Sohne has been reborn and now the first model (actually, the second batch of the first model - Waltz No.1) is going around the world tour.  The last stop, Tokyo, has been held at the Commercial Section of Austrian Embassy - as you can guess, located in one of the best area in Tokyo.

The last report is here:

Yes, the brand's origin is Austria, but admittedly it is "Swiss Made".  That said, the minimalist design is from Austrian architect, Adolf Loos, certainly has given some influence, which in turn was, according to the owner/CEO, Dr. Robert Punkenhofer, influenced by Japanese minimalism culture first exhibited at Wien Expo in 1873.

Dr. Robert Punkenhofer, the owner/CEO of Carl Suchy & Sohne.
He was from "art" space.  He creates high quality/ high standard watches by cooperating with the watchmakers, designers, and parts manufacturers.  This vertical collaboration project by project approach is now being employed by many brands - maybe the natural evolution of mid-small size manufacturing.

He is not completely unfamiliar with Japan.  He was the General Manager of Austrian Booth at the Earth Expo held in Aichi, Japan in 2005, so he frequented between Austria and Japan every month for a while.  He then perhaps got to know Dr. Ingomar Lochschmidt, Commercial Counsellor, Head of Advantage Austria Japan, Austrian Embassy Commercial Section, who spoke next.

Dr. Ingomar Lochschmidt, Austrian Embassy
He spoke of the history of relationship between Austria and Japan as well as the brand Carl Suchy & Sohne.  He has known Dr. Punkenhofer for a long time.  Carl Suchy & Sohne is a very well known brand in Austria and Dr. Lochschmidt has one pocket watch of it.  So, he feels some fate that his old friend Dr. Punkenhofer revived the brand.

And then, Mr. Norimichi Kasai - CEO of Noble Styling, the importer/ distributor for Carl Suchy & Sohne in Japan.  He says he has been in this business for almost 40 years and always think it is about time to retire, but good new independent brands like Carl Suchy & Sohne pop up continuously, so he cannot quit yet!

And this is the "Blue Danube", special edition (LE of 5) of Waltz No.1, in the elegant Bernard Favre winder.

The whole 2nd batch of Waltz No.1 are 50 pieces, out of which, 5 are "Blue Danube" as above.  And 45 is divided to black and white.

And, this is another Limited Edition, Skeleton version.  Only 5 will be made and 2 has been sold already.  Entered GPHG 2018.

This is the video how the "second disc" works.

Sorry for the shortness - it was too crowded!

Thank you for a wonderful evening, and I am looking forward to the "next"!

Carl Suchy is having a tour in the USA sooner. I think New York, Seattle and San Francisco .

Thanks a lot for this report!

The brand is taking a different approach from Habring, the more traditional Austrian watch brand. But I have to say that I really like the Loos inspired design - definitely well done.
