Another Furlan Marri - the 1011-A

Sep 15, 2021,14:26 PM

It seems like a fair few among the WPS community have dipped a toe.

It's evident that a great deal of effort has gone into its design - from conception through build to quality assurance. The end result is a classical, aesthetic treat at an entirely accessible price. Replace the OEM strap and an already above-average piece of work improves further.

I'm indifferent to the fact that this watch runs on a mechaquartz movement. I've used the analogy elsewhere: if we visit an art gallery to take in the work of a promising newcomer, we're not going to dwell on the hooks and twining used to mount the exhibit.

The 'Mr. Grey' has been nominated in this year's GPHG 'challenge' category. My vote would go to the Ciga Design Blue Planet, but the folks behind FM have built up quite a lot of good will among learned collectors of vintage, so that may count in its favour. Either way, this is a good watch.

But saying, "I've used the analogy elsewhere: if we visit an art gallery to take in the work of a promising newcomer, we're not going to dwell on the hooks and twining used to mount the exhibit." may be down playing the importance and significance of a wa...

Thanks. I'm not downplaying mechanical movements, so allow me to clarify.

My point is specific to a mechaquartz watch like this and reactions to them. We observe some enthusiasts spending a disproportionate amount of time and energy bemoaning the use of mechaquartz, to the extent that it risks missing the point of the watch its...

Honestly, there are tons of nice looking and inexpensive chronos outhere

Some photos on Instagram, some blog reviews, a pinch of hype and that's it. I'm glad you like it, but whether I can't even really appreciate the Seiko spring drive, you can guess that a quartz doesn't attract me at all. Aesthetic and mechanics are insepar...

Much easier to make a case inspired from patek

than making a movement with the same inspiration

You're right that there are (a) dial, (b) case and (c) movement aesthetics to consider, and for mechanical watches all three together

The watch pictured above a humble mechaquartz so direct comparisons can be made for (a) and (b). For (c) it is likely superior to any mechanical watch in terms of timekeeping accuracy, while being plain to look at. It offers performance if not soul.

Have you misunderstood the Springdrive?

I only ask because as I’m sure you know the SD is totally mechanically driven - no batteries in sight.

It's not completely mechanic, it's an hybrid

Though the precision and quality is remarkable, it's not my cup of tea. Anyway is by far better than any quartz movement, there's no competition between the 2 technologies

I’m sorry but it’s not even a hybrid

 By: hub6152 : September 29th, 2021-05:51
This is where the confusion arises because the word quartz is associated with a battery powered cheap watch. Yes the SD utilises a quartz Crystal as part of the regulation process but that is powered by the mechanical action rather than requiring an addit...

Is there any electronic part?

There is a quartz oscillating crystal

 By: hub6152 : October 2nd, 2021-11:11
and that’s the only thing a Spring Drive and a quartz movement have in common. To call the SD a hybrid isn’t accurate or fair since a quartz movement is powered by a battery and a stepper motor where an SD is powered by a conventional mainspring and gear ...

It's a nice-looking watch.

And it's well-constructed, case-wise. And it isn't pretending to be anything it's not. I don't think it deserves the criticism it's getting here. Simple and very inexpensive; good-looking. That's it.

+1. That's all there is to say, really.

Don't understand the high praise for this.

Nicely made watch? Yes, at least the case and dial.. Well constructed? Sure. Value for money? Most definitely. Ground Breaking? Obviously Not. It's a quartz watch with a copy cat design that they borrowed liberally from Patek. There's some powerful influe...
