A rare box set!

Jan 17, 2023,19:51 PM

A month ago, Kurono Tokyo, Hajime Asaoka's 'budget' brand opened its first boutique in Aoyama, Tokyo.  To commemorate the occasion, Kurono released a box set comprising three urushi dial watches limited to 88 box sets.  Unlike Kurono's previous offerings which were only available to purchase online, these watches were only obtainable if one opened an account with Kurono and visited the boutique in person.

I had been fortunate and privileged to work in a Japanese company for 25 years while I had lived in London and had kept in touch with my ex boss who conveniently lived in Tokyo.  Although he had left the company 13 years ago, we had exchanged birthday greetings with each other so I decided to ask him for a big favour when I heard of this latest release by Kurono

To cut a long story short, the box set arrived yesterday and I can say that the urushi dials look magnificent in every colour, partly due to the fact that the omission of the numerals on the dial adds to its purity and beauty.  In addition, the straps on these watches are arguably the most supple in the market today making them a joy to wear.

I count myself privileged and very fortunate to own this box set which to me exemplifies Kurono Tokyo at its best!

Lovely colors,

I am certain that they look even more impressive in person. From the images, my favorite is the green dial . Cheers, thanks for the story! Filip

Thank you Filip!

The green dial was also my favourite when I first saw photos of the launch. But you are absolutely correct that the watches look better in real life and the dials look quite different under varying light conditions.

I saw these when the e-mail came in and liked but don't have suitable connections. Very nice.

Thank you for your feedback!

I think many previous Kurono owners were left frustrated when they found out that the only way they could obtain one of these box sets, assuming they had no contacts in Japan, would have been to fly to Japan which is logistically not possible for many. I ...

Beautiful dials

I like the various colors, they work with many outfits. Congratulations

I agree Larry, thank you.

I am glad that the colours chosen were quite discreet and not too loud!

Unfortunately not

These were the only three colours available.

Late to Kurono

 By: GuyT : January 18th, 2023-01:57
I came late to Kurono and the first released after creating an account was the Seiji, which I really liked. But there is no woman in my life and I couldn't lie. I have since acquired one pre-owned and it is as good as I thought. I have put it on a JPM gre...

I liked the Seiji too!

 By: sham1 : January 18th, 2023-03:40
But was unsuccessful in getting one allocated to my wife. I have seen the Seiji in the flesh and it is the very chic. Hope you are enjoying wearing your Kurono. As they say, better late than never!

Very very beautiful set

I like Hajime Asaoka’s creations very much and this tasteful and elegant set is no exception. Enjoy it and wear it in good health.

Thank you for your kind words!

As it is almost impossible to buy a Hajime Asaoka watch, this is the next best thing and as I love the way he focuses on the dial in the Kurono range. That after all is what we look at most of the time!

Huge Congrats my friend, beautiful set

Definitely something that fits your style imho.

Thank you my friend!

 By: sham1 : January 18th, 2023-08:32
Happy New Year to you! And you know my style very well - take away the brand name from the dial and this could be a Moser with an urushi dial!

Fair comment about the strap!

 By: sham1 : January 18th, 2023-08:39
But for me comfort is everything. My RW Smith arrived a few months ago with a less than impressive strap (especially for a watch costing 40 times more than the Kurono) and it was not even comfortable. So relatively I am a great fan of these comfortable Ku...

I honestly think they are the same, same black leather, same looks. They are very supple and comfortable indeed, but lacking a bit of "excitement".

I get your point, clearly the pleasure on your watches stand in the Uruchi lacquer dial, while chronos are more of daily wearers. I chose a plain red leather strap for my Shiro chrono which looks good and makes the watch fun to wear.

 By: sham1 : January 18th, 2023-13:27
A red leather strap definitely adds a new dimension to the chrono. Well done for being confidently adventurous

Bravo, mon ami. Enjoy!

Thank you Nico!

My target of having fewer than 15 watches is gradually failing. My new target is fewer than 20 watches!

Yes! ;)

But I am holding to my less is more motto…

 By: Mike H : January 25th, 2023-08:24
I am further consolidating my collection with further reduction… and so happy about each move. Of course it is a huge sacrifice to let go some beloved treasures each time but on the other hand it is for upgrading, making dreams come true, and less headach...

Mike, I am doing exactly the same thing as you are

 By: sham1 : January 25th, 2023-11:24
Consolidation requires a lot of focus and determination but the reward is always worth it especially if it means we attain a grail. For me, I have always wanted a Voutilainen so I am aiming for one even if I have to sell half of the watches in my collecti...

I remembrer the discussion my friend 😉

 By: Mike H : January 25th, 2023-21:33
And yes for sure consolidation is pain in a way but at the end when you enjoy a real grail it is worth 👌👌 believe me I know what I am talking about 😉

I think Kari has waited long enough for me!

It has been 12 years sInce I took him out for lunch in London. I am the definition of 'slow'!!

I understand

 By: sham1 : January 18th, 2023-17:45
that it is more of a meeting place for fans and clients of Kurono as the boutique itself will carry no stock to sell since the watches are sold online apart from on this one instance.

Good to know!

 By: patrick_y : January 19th, 2023-02:54
As a Kurono owner, I'm definitely keen to see it!

As would I Patrick

 By: sham1 : January 19th, 2023-07:21
except I have no plans to visit Tokyo anytime soon. You must tell me about it when you visit it.

Will do! I am nearby!

 By: patrick_y : January 22nd, 2023-22:06

You are a great traveller my friend!

 By: sham1 : January 23rd, 2023-02:48
Only you would define California and Tokyo to be 'nearby'!

Congratulations Sham !

these timepieces are visually pleasing & much refined than the ones with numerals. I’m happy for you, enjoy in great health. Best, Mahesh.,

I agree whole heartedly Mahesh!

The one of the left would be my favorite, thank you for sharing !

Thank you Boris!

Finally someone who does not choose the green dial!

This set is amazingly superb ! 🤩🤩

Huge congrats my friend ! I am very glad for you, you are lucky 😉

Thank you Mike!

Your photography skills would bring the best out of the colour of these urushi dials.

I would be so happy to make a nice shooting with these 3 beauties…

 By: Mike H : January 24th, 2023-06:56
…and several of your other stunning pieces. I look forward your next visit to Paris with a selection of them incl. your MG set 😉

Ah, the MG set! :-)

 By: sham1 : January 24th, 2023-09:05
You will never forget that set and neither will I. More than 4 years of ownership and I have not worn it yet - I do wind it daily though and use the pocket watch occasionally.

Of course I shall never forget that MG set !

 By: Mike H : January 24th, 2023-11:34
And I would do the same and also use the pocket watch. Do you have a custom made etui for protecting it from scratches? Each of my pocket watches is having its own custom made etui for having the very exact needed size for being neither too loose nor too ...

The pcoket watch

 By: sham1 : January 24th, 2023-12:11
like the watch are both wrapped in its original plastic when not used. They live in the original Moritz Grossmann box, So every morning I actually unfold the plastic to wind both of them. And by the way, I love your pocket watch collection! ...

One pocket watch is enough for me
