I make up a significant part of the pre-owned market for these brands

Aug 23, 2018,09:34 AM

There aren't many dealers who know much about them or are willing to stock them. It's really a specialized area that I've been in and around for more than a decade, including starting and running MB&F North America.

You have to remember the orders of magnitude we're talking about. Rolex makes over a million watches/year, Patek probably around 40,000, these small brands are in the 100-300 range. There just are not many pieces in existence, marketing budgets are miniscule, etc. It's a completely different market; one which most do not have the expertise to handle.

Because the volumes are so low, you really are limited to the luck of whatever is on the market. Sometimes there are several URWERKs floating around, sometimes none. Low volume=high volatility. Feel free to PM or email me if you want to discuss further.

Best,
Steve

Urwerk vs MB&F vs other independents

 By: psychotic : August 15th, 2018-15:34
Dear Forum Friends, As one who has recently tried the UR 103T and looooved the piece, I have a question regarding the lack of a secondary/used market for the brand (especially in Hong Kong). I know that Internet based companies like Chrono24 do carry Urwe...

Local dealers consider it as too risky

 By: kykw : August 15th, 2018-18:04
It's a niche market for indies. Most dealers prioritize liquidity above all. They're merchants, not necessarily watch people. This is especially true in Hong Kong where I also call home. Consider a large portion of their potential customers wouldn't know ...

In addition to Ken's point re how the dealers would view these pieces, production numbers also are a factor.

 By: Jay (Eire) : August 15th, 2018-18:26
You mentioned Journe by way of comparison. Journe production is probably 4-5x Urwerk on an annual basis, and has easily been that for the last 10-15 years (almost the life of both manufactures). Just by numbers one would expect to see Journe more. And als...

Demand is not high enough to stock large amounts of them new or used...

It's a business decision. There's not enough production and not enough demand for the pieces. They're really a well kept secret. And they're staying that way!

I saw some used Urwerk in a TST used watch store a while back.

The watch market is currently focused on vintage sports Rolex and Patek, as well as Patek Nautilus and the new Rolex GMT/Daytona. Like the poster said above the dealers will only stock pieces that move. I like some older stuff but cant find them in any br...

Sorry cant help you with your question about HK .

But in Holland there isnt also any watch shop who sells independents (mb&f , Urwerk,DB,FPJ etc etc) . They are all focused on the big brands. So i need to find my future watch (if preowned) on Chrono , this forum or through some contacts i have made over ...

Correct my friend , because these are Dutch brands 😉

 By: Hulk : August 16th, 2018-15:33
One place in particular had so many watches I took a photos of each watch window. It was union watches and I looked back on the photo and you can see it on the bottom left. May still be there? Good luck. Cheers S ...

HK is HK...

 By: gengar : August 16th, 2018-17:08
It's HK, I've literally met "collectors" there who own dozens of watches who have never even heard of FPJ. Over the last decade, HK has been the biggest Rolex market for a reason. I'm almost amazed there is any market for independents there.

I'm sorry, but perhaps you are meeting the wrong kind of “collectors”.

 By: psychotic : August 17th, 2018-23:25
My HK collector friends, many of whose are fellow PuristS are extremely well versed in the world of watches.

of course they're the wrong kind.

I tried the titanium version and loved its lightness. I would imagine the gold case would give it a bit more heft.

Thanks yes there is a bit of heft as opposed to the Titanium
