Why was this dishonest?
Everyone had a chance to get one I think...some did. By this thinking everything is dishonest e.g. Lange releasing the 1815 Anniversary Platinum as a boutique edition (or many other brands). I don't think there is any game: they had an idea and took it to Vacheron that agreed to launch it. I am 100% with you with some initiatives like the secret meeting, vintage hype etc. but I don't think that a limited edition linked to a particular audience (a site) is dishonest at all. Patek and many other brands continuously release special edition for a specific market...it is not different than this. Actually this was way more democratic. If you meant about having skin in the game and not being objective I haven't seen anything of that on Hodinkee but of course your are entitled to your opinion 
Like Zenith did issue the hodinkee one in different colours, VC can do the same if they want to.
