While the focus is obviously on getting out of this insane situation, I'm always happily on the lookout for new watches -- no more and no less than before, if I like something a lot.

Frankly, with my type of job (it carries a rather "predictable" salary unlike the private sector, but also life tenure) I guess I've been lucky not to feel this virus on a financial level. Actually, keeping out of Italy just meant LOTS of money (unfortunately) "saved". So I really won't hesitate to reward myself for this much, much quieter summer, if I see a good chance ;-)

I'll hardy be able to pick anything up before Christmas, since that's when I'll (hopefully) go back, but as I'm in regular touch with a number of people and ADs, if I can find something "new", it's a done deal! ;-)

And summer is surprisingly flying away FAST also this year (nearly 3 months out of 4 are gone at the speed of light!), so I'm optimistic I'll survive for five more months without the next watch...

Always try to be positive and look forward to what the future brings....for sure now more than ever, it's going to be better than the present! ;-)

Covid affecting collecting?

 By: Mostel : July 23rd, 2020-14:29
I have to admit, despite the fact that I can afford to collect more watches, Covid has demoralized me significantly. It is this sense that, there now exists a precedent/ new reality where your income can be stopped by your govt. This is not meant to be a ...

Not adding to my collection, either . . .

 By: Dr No : July 23rd, 2020-14:49
. . . and the decision was made right around the same time covid reared its ugly head, but that's just a coincidence. After accumulating for almost two decades, I'm full. So if another enters my collection, one has to leave first. Disciplined, Art

Never say never 😉 [nt]

Only thing that has changed for me

 By: Cozmopak : July 23rd, 2020-15:04
is that I'm only buying from small independent watchmakers. Partly because that's where my interests currently reside, and partly because I want to support them.

Perhaps some trades...

2nd level 'buying.'

I became so sad and angry

Hmmm a nice gesture

that also benefited the 'watch dragon' within.

While the focus is obviously on getting out of this insane situation, I'm always happily on the lookout for new watches -- no more and no less than before, if I like something a lot.

Good fortune for you

 By: Mostel : August 1st, 2020-13:57
In some ways, I have also been fortunate, a few things for me sell more than before... but the shock of March April will not soon be forgotten and will keep me quite 'cool' for probably a year at least...

I too, feel the need to support my ADs and Independent brands

 By: Monopole : July 23rd, 2020-17:09
Like almost everyone here, the speed and dollar value of acquiring has somewhat tapered down this year and mostly like, through 2021 as well. So far, I have bought something, albeit small, from the closer ADs, to show support for the sales representatives...

It definitely had a chokehold on businesses

 By: Cookies : July 23rd, 2020-17:48
Very big impact. Many of my neighbours are forced to sell their houses because they cannot pay the mortgage. Some sectors are affected more than others. And some sectors actually did better than pre-covid situations, for example, healthcare, hair stylists...

So true! [nt]

 By: amanico : July 23rd, 2020-21:53

Indeed.

Hooo-aah!

I’m not planning on buying anything other than the two I’m on the waiting list.

 By: ZSHSZ : July 23rd, 2020-19:15
Actually I’ve been quietly reducing the collection, and I continue on that path. I went full circle, in this twenty some years, and I feel I burned out, most brands disappoint me, nothing for my taste, and the hype is not something I embrace. After gettin...

The frequent wish on WPS of wearing a new watch ‘in good health’

 By: 997c4gts : July 24th, 2020-01:38
has never been more prescient! I bought a watch to support my AD as soon as lockdown released- a blue Pelagos to match my son’s. Would have been for family vacation but alas, we’re at home for what’s left of summer! This has been a tough period as we watc...

Still on a wishlist, not waitlist!

But to be honest, with finances changed it’s been good to re-evaluate. Being on a stricter diet no bad thing, can always look at the menu.!!! 😉

Why do I doubt that Nico

Good point...

 By: Mostel : August 1st, 2020-14:00
Although I have not bought a disappointing watch in years... there was a period of seemingly constant disappointment... and a situation like this can take a person on the fence and push them over for good.

No watches for me.

 By: Overwound : July 24th, 2020-08:43
My finances are focused on essentials (food, bills, well being, etc.) and the only way I remain involved in the watch hobby these days are forums and enjoying what I already have. Not much horological fun going on at Casa Overwound these days.

There is so much to be grateful for

High strung emotions either negative (good for them to buy) or positive (good for them to sell.)

Out of habit, I continue to be on the lookout for the next watch.

That being said, my enthusiasm for "the hunt" is dampened now. For me, the excitement of wearing any particular watch is so often tied to the experiences that I intend to have with it. So, whether it's going to the office (which calls for certain watches ...

I have bought two watches since Covid-19 started and those are opportunities that don't come by easily

 By: singingbee : July 25th, 2020-08:16
I am definitely exercising restraint in purchases of watches and any other big ticket items for the rest of this year due to Covid-19 and the down economy.

Like others, practicing some restraint

 By: Mostel : August 2nd, 2020-18:43

It has definitely affected my “collecting mindset.” I now think long and hard before considering a purchase and am at the point where there’s only 2-3 particular watches I’d consider buying.

 By: Obeezy : July 25th, 2020-13:34
I know we will come out if this, but until I see more progress I am laying low unless it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.

The watch market is super hot right now.

 By: watch-er : July 25th, 2020-16:39
Many had predicted the watch market would cool with the pandemic but exactly the opposite happened. I believe it is due to the large amount of money which was not spent on travel, meals, entertainment and work attire being spent on watches, cars, home imp...

Watches are not a Priority During this Pandemic
