My thoughts

Welcome to the WIS hobby. Price is a big factor which is an indicator of labour cost, cost of technology, material costs, and advertising.

I have a $1000 piece which gives me a lot of joy to wear it. It is a Seiko Presage with an urushi dial. The mechanism is quite good too. In this range, there are many factors to consider too, and I enjoy hunting for $1000 pieces sometimes. But it is increasingly difficult to buy anything with $1000 these days, with $1000 being a weeks expenses for most households in a developed country. Perhaps 30 years ago, $1000 would get you something very decent.

Part of the fun is the saving-up part, and many of us, although richer than average, still have to budget and save for pieces we want. Many of us felt the sacrifice, be it foregoing a holiday, or selling stocks to fund a dream.

Quite honestly, I would advice you to save up to get something better. There are some “community” pieces that are accessible to at least 68% of the population (Bell Curve), namely the Longines Legend Diver and Tudor Ranger. But even those pieces, sigh, have their limitations.

I have a cousin who liked watches so much, but sadly, is not educated or has any skills. He basically ripped off his family’s expenses to fund his watch habit, and it is very sad to see him wear an AP Offshore, when his wife and kid lives in the attic of their parents flat. And he basically goes around borrowing watches from friends to pass them off as his own on social media. That is sick. My message to him: “don’t feed your ego at the expense of your loved ones” I would respect himif he did otherwise and treated his family better

Beyond that, perhaps we can talk about other hobbies in life, such as hiking or cycling? If someone comes up to me and talks about watches, I either pretend I don’t know anything, or if they know a tourbillon from a minute repeater, I’d open up, or if they wore a proper piece, and at least express some aspiration to learn, I’d talk. If not, no.. I’m sorry I don’t have time to waste or give dreams to someone who is not ready.

Watchmaking is a craft where there is an obsession to perfection, and obsession to perfection has a big price.

When did you finally make the leap into more expensive watches?

I haven’t been on here much or even participate like most do not because I don’t like it here but because I don’t buy as much like I used too and when I do I tend to buy watches in the $50-200 price range but now I’m getting older (gonna be 35 on 07/19) I...

that cost me a 100 dollars and they are just as fun and dear to me as watches that cost 100 times or more, the cost is irrelevant, that is why we don't discuss values here, we only care if you love the watch and why, thats all. Congrats on your new additi...

We simply love watches, and every watch gives you something different. You can enjoy them all, in different ways, depending on what you look for with it.

Thank You

I feel old

 By: kevinc1001 : July 12th, 2020-17:29
I don't think 50s or 60s are old and I'm sure you'll live for a very long time.

Needless to say, expensive is a very relative concept ;-) For most people, a $1k watch in *incredibly* expensive, for others (e.g., art collectors) a $1M watch may be *incredibly* cheap...

The only important thing is, really, that you seem to enjoy the watches you own (I hate to sound PC or rhetorical, but for once, it's the simple truth! ;-) WPS is actually the most welcoming watch community that you can find on the entire web, and we don'...

I think for many of us, like you are finding now, there are various points or triggers that might move us from one zip code another.

Many people might see that happen around a life event, marriage, divorce even, a new job etc. Like everything else I think we can all find justifications for spending more on any item, watches no different. As others have said, value doesn’t matter here. ...

Do not shame about wear inexpensive watches. The main reason is, you are a watch enthusiast.

I bought my first nice watch in my early 20s. And I still have it!

But I was into watches before I was even a teenager. And I was a member on PuristSPro/WatchProSite before I even bought myself a nice watch. The community here is excellent, it's definitely all about passion and knowledge. And I'm glad I don't see fanboyi...

As many said already this is a super welcoming forum that appreciates the passion for watches

I am at a similar age as yours and joined the forum recently. I have been amazed by the positivity and passion members here have for watches, it is a wonderful place compared to the other forums (non watch related) that are full of bullying and abuse. It ...

Looking forward to see your acquisition

Price is irrelevant: I get as excited by new releases from Seiko and Sinn than I am by those from Lange, Vacheron or Rolex.

Silly but true: When I was a kid I had boundless energy so my parents enrolled me in a gymnastics studio. I thought I would love jumping around carefree, bouncing on trampolines, diving into pits full of foam, and hanging around with other like-minded kid...

and sadly, many people probably won't read/see it. Such truth and stark reality in this post. The uglier side of watch enthusiasm too. It seems evident that this forum mostly consists of people who are consistently operating at the higher levels of Maslow...

I wrote from my heart, and my painful observations. I was once a blue collared worker who hit a glass ceiling. I could not afford pieces above $8000. That was on a low-medium wage in Singapore. I tried to hang around the big boys but sadly, there was alwa...

Cost is relative and mostly irrelevant. Both are cimpletely eclipsed by passion, appreciation and understanding that watches are one of the few things still made with an (unecessary!)
