What do I have here?

So my daughter is clearing out the storage barn and comes up with an unlabeled box with some interesting items in it.









Three vintage Elgin pocket watches. Actually, one is labeled Elgin North Watch Company. I was able to open one case to inspect the movement. I'm kind of pumped up about this find. I'm wondering if any of you vintage pocket watch buffs can help me understand what I have here. Thanks, M4

Movement numbers (not case numbers) can be looked up in the Elgin database. The movement picture you showed is a 7-jewel 6-size (ladies size) movement made in the late 1880s. By the way, it’s not “North” but rather “Natl”—an abbreviation of National. The...  

Many of these old American pocketwatches can still be serviced

Parts were designed to be interchangeable and were often produced in large numbers. As mentioned, you can lookup the movement serial number and get production year, quantity, etc. I’m often surprised by how good the timekeeping is when repaired.
