WatchProSite tries to dispel the marketing myths...

Many of the moderators on WPS try to dispel marketing myths that have become urban folklore.  "A Rolex takes a year to make" is a common misconception spread by indiscriminate watch sales people.

One member recently suggested that "Patek Philippe uses alligator straps only from alligators who died from old age."  We hope to dispel the naivete that has been propagated from an industry that is revered by uninformed consumers.

Another member assumes that "Patek Philippe has the best finishing of any watch in the world."  While that is mostly an opinion and conjecture, this particular member at the time had not seen other competitors and had never understood the manufacturing process.  He didn't know how anglage was achieved and what was required.  He didn't know the difference between brass plates and German silver plates, et. al.

WPS tries its best to shed light to false rumors, to dispel myths, and to quell incorrect assumptions about the industry.  The moderators are all experts about watches and the industry.  But the moderators are humans too, humans who like these products.

While we are all fans of watches, and thus a self selected group, we all try our best not to fall into the standards of others.  We should always follow our own rules.  My rule is:
1.  Acquire what you like.
2.  Only acquire if you are confident you'll like it many years from now.
3.  If you think about it daily for months, that means you should probably make the acquisition.
4.  Be selective.  Buy fewer, buy better.  Less is more.
5.  Sometimes you'll find a piece so compelling that you break your own rule.  Permit yourself this on occasion.

The recent buying and internet frenzy surrounding the TimexQ and not least the identical phenomenon with its BLNR sibling has got me to thinking as to the reasons I collect watches and not least what type of collector I have become. It’s a somewhat lengt...

And then some. Of course there is hype and marketing, but as you grow up into watches, they are less and less important. As you educate yourself like in other things in life, you start to take another kind of appreciation for whatever your hobby is. At le...

Very interesting topic, mon ami. I used to collect around themes ( Travel Watches / Alarm / Chronos / Divers and so on... ).

I always bought watches I liked. Now, I am becoming more and more picky, and the watch I am considering to get has to please me a lot. In fact, I am more in a downsizing mood, to get some watches I cannot afford. Yes, I think the main criterion is... Plea...

If age teaches us anything it’s Quality over Quantity every time. Better to spend your money on a nice bottle of red than a cheap quartz trinket

I don’t want to think too deep into this, just be selective if funds are limited and not regret. I also echo what Patrick said. Should I consolidate these to few bigger pieces? Yes I can but can you wear “bigger” pieces on a daily basis, as we say daily b...
