The shaped quartz crystal absorbs electrical energy as it bends and then returns it as it unbends.

Just like how a balance spring stores up energy and then returns it as movement of the balance wheel, once per oscillation.

The gross energy thus stored divided by the energy loss in one oscillation is called the Q factor. The Q factor of a perfect oscillator would be infinity. For a mechanical balance it is around 1,000. For a quartz oscillator it’s around 1,000,000.
