Possible "Gifts" to forum members: A hypothetical post

Sep 21, 2021,05:34 AM

The goal of this post is to see if you can get the mindset and ideals distilled into a piece for another forum member. I hope you enjoy it.

I find that watches make very meaningful gifts for loved ones, business associates etc. In this post, I'd like to explore a hypothetical situation.

If funds were unlimited, and you could gift pieces to a few forum members, what would you choose and why?

I have a few ideas in mind for a few forum members, the list goes on:

  • Amanico - a JLC reverso Gran Sport. Why? I find he enjoys history and innovation at the same time. The Gran Sport is a very truthful lineage of the Reverso, which is supposed to be a sports watch. With it's ventilated caseback, and strap. it would be the reverso to wear for a game of Polo.
  • DouglasM - This is a little hard. He picks obscure pieces, with no pressure to yield to peer pressure. Seems to like aquatic themed pieces. An Omega Aquaterra Ultralight comes to my mind
  • Weems@8 - maybe a Girard Perregaux Laureato Quartz 40th Anniversary. This immediately comes to mind
  • Holdenchamp - A fully restored JLC Dirty Dozen with archive papers
  • Subexplorer - The most James Bond piece of the Omega range, perhaps the 50th Anniversary seamaster
  • DrNo - The Grand Seiko Thong Sia Jade limited edition 150 pieces. He said he likes it.
  • Yacomino - A Franck Muller Giga Tourbillon. I sense he has a restraint flamboyance, this will be perfect.
  • Lankysudanese AKA Hussam - An AP ROO "The Beast"
  • Sergio - The Blancpain X-Fathoms. I am sure he will use it
  • Cazalea - This one is hard. He has nearly everything. He likes novel materials, so perhaps, an AP RO Lionel Messi Edition with a tantalum bezel
  • MichaelC - a GP Flyback Ferrari edition in mint condition
  • FabR - A little art, and flamboyance. A De Bethune Starry Varius Tourbillion Deadbeat Seconds
  • Forvesta - A Gerald Genta original Gefica fully restored with archive papers
  • Glau - Gerald Genta Mickey Mouse 1996 HK Handover edition
  • Aperna - A Rolex Cellini Prince Rectangular "doctor's watch"
  • Echi - A Grand Seiko Mt Iwate dial manual-wound
  • Captain Scarlet - a HYT with lumed fluid
  • Marcus Hanke - Something one can jump off a helicopter with, tough, practical. A Carl Bucherer Scubatec Patravi
  • Terbaboom - a Girard Perregaux Aston Martin edition tourbillon
What do you think? Please feel free to add on more forum members and their hypothetical perfect gift watch.

What a novel idea 😁.

I’ll add a few - cookies: Charles Frodsham Double Impulse chronometer. He recently confessed/submitted that a dress piece is what he needs best. And this combines all the movement-tech and material-use to keep his incoming thread lengthy and informative -...

Wow I didn’t know of this house

Went to check it out and was blown away. It uses old methods to make modern pieces. Indeed, the choice is highly interesting. Yes I need a dress piece for sure. I like the choices for Sham1 and AmisE too.

Yes we were too late to the party

There must be more makers like that coming up. Thing is, I have not been able to venture into the 80k and beyond arena which these type of makers charge for their masterpieces. I was late to Sarpaneva too. Should have taken a trip to Kuala Lumpur a decade...

I’m not ready for the 80k arena neither, but by the time that I may be, they would have joined the unobtainium list.

So, and since some of these have very long delivery times (up to 6 years now for this Charles Frodsham), I figured I’d try to catch up to those who’ve had a head start. So I just placed my order yesterday 😁. Another purist did too. Come join. PM and if yo...

I think I will write a post on this

Based on a condensation (summary) of what is know of this masterpiece. Watching the video now on it.

Oh, that’s gonna be quite the horological dissection. Looking forward to it.

Read the SJX article too (hope to not be violating any forum rules)

He was here many years ago

Used to be so active in his posts. Together with Kong, Forvesta, Anthony Tsai etc.

For me it would be the "cleanest" watch of them all.. the EICHI I by Credor.

You always push the envelope, my friend. Hell, you don’t just push it, you make paper planes 🤣🤣🤣

So who does like to make paper planes?

How 'bout I gift Art his Grand Seiko. He's been a mentor and friend for decades, yah, we're that old ;-)

What would be the perfect gift to Hussam?

 By: Cookies : September 21st, 2021-09:57
I am curious about your interpretation of his personality and the piece you’d choose to match it.

I’ll take that AP “the beast” and wear it with pride.

 By: Lankysudanese : September 21st, 2021-18:59
There’s a famous arab saying that a gift should neither be gifted to someone else, not sold. And a gift from a fellow purist would be the centerpiece of my collection. I’d still b%#*h and moan about the modular chrono and the date and and and…🤣🤣🤣 ...

I think 'the beast' would be a nice addition for you; you may need both wrists to wear it though. May be tough pulling it off without it looking like handcuffs.

 By: DouglasM : September 22nd, 2021-17:07
He'll ship you a winder too, so your date is always current! The modular chrono though, I hear you.....lol

I need a winder myself

 By: Cookies : September 23rd, 2021-01:08
A variable speed winder that can wind 4 watches at once. Hint hint to Santa

This particular Doxa . . .

. . . belongs to an acquaintance. It previously belonged to Jean Michel Cousteau. And before that, it belonged to Jacques. It would make a perfect gift to Bill. Art ...

Amazing heirloom

It would make a perfect gift to Bill indeed.

My heart likes Rolex, but I’m in a strange conundrum. I don’t like how the brand is treating the customers - they basically made watch collectors lose their pride/dignity to seek their pieces. My experience of buying an AK and trying to get it authenticat...

If it have an automatic movement, it’s perfect. Why? One quartz watch is enough for me, or… it must be more Longines Conquests quartz watches, or a Rolex Oyster quartz. There is room for a Girard Perregaux Laureato quartz 40th edition, so you’ve got it ri...

 By: Cookies : September 22nd, 2021-02:51
It is to fully restore an IWC mark 12, and wear it like it is brand new. This hobby doesn’t only involve expensive pieces. Like Nico does, it has an element of heritage and effort. Anyone can spend money (even a chimpanzee can buy an AP ROO) - what separa...

Gran sport is the reverso which is true to it’s form

I sense, I will hunt for this

To refurbish it, in the same tender loving care as you did for your Volvo.

I did give away watches to my buddies, because I know I won’t live forever. Nothing major, just in the 3k ballpark.

I’d like to admit

In the past, i did incur debt to get pieces I like. It spiralled out of control with the purchase of 1 piece. Now, life has given more. No more debts on compounding credit card interests or credit card usage. The AD gives better prices for cash/bank trans...
