There are a lot of factors, here...

Such as light / Darkness, heath / cold, humidity, the laquer used on the dial ( see for example the Non Matcning Panerai 202/ A, or the Rolex 16 550 Cream Dial ), the composiition of the radioacticve lumious material ( tritium, radium, promethium, strontium ) and so on.

Of course, here, you are speaking about the patina of the indexes and hands, but the dials also can get a patina ( dials turning to brown, for example ).

Time is the only legitimate artist, to me... At the opposite of these small " Chemists " or cookers.

You know what? Let the theories being theories, don't unveil the mystery, don't try to disciver the alchemy, it is a marvellous mystery.

Best,

Nicolas

I'm sure many wonder about it, consider it seriously when hunting down those desirable vintages with awesome 'patina'. Check out the Rolex and Panerai forums and you know people pay top dollars for them, among many other factors. I often wonder how Patina...

legitimate artist, I'm sure all purists do, let nature nurtures. For a long time, I was only thinking this would be the way which I'm most pleased to pay a premium for, but is it? Of course I can choose to turn a blind eye to the ugly truth, but if I know...

Often asked and discussed but yet still no one have a definiteve answer... Many have their own myths about patina... Some really interesting ones also... I believe that storing a piece and keeping it away from UV light definitely help to develop strong pa...

possible It'd be a heart-breaking moment I guess To me such act is no better than doing a frankenstein piece IMHO. HAGWE Mech.

sam, surely your theory of hiding away can produce conflicting effects

i appreciate that a lot of people have come to the conclusion that hiding a watch away will cause it to go dark with patina, but what about the dials that patinate as well as the lume. i would assume that the dial will age, darken, change due to exposure ...

That's right.

I noticed some pieces with such special feature on the dial.. I guess that's something I couldn't explain.. And many and you would rather keep it as mystery.. And so do I. I only stated my observation of different pieces I've came across with.. Best, Sam

beg to differ...

Hi Sam, I disagree with this: " As for moisture, I hardly believe so... As many of Vintage SeaDwellers, and Comex diver pieces , which were actually used in real deep diving operation, rarely show strong patina on the dial.." In my view, there is no doubt...

My experience...

I had a wonderful Breitling 806 Navitimer dating from 1966 which entered my family around 1970. It then sat in a drawer for 25 years and when it emerged it had crazed plexi due to age and lovely dark markers and hands. The dial had softened a little but o...

how nice to know it took that time to transform your gem into a better piece over the years! A true labour of love! Mech.

My father received an Omege F300 as an engagement gift from my mother and so the breitling went into a drawer and was never worn again. The sympathetic restoration was done by breitling in the 90's but I did have issues obtaining parts for subsequent serv...

some sellers actually "toast" their dials....i am not sure if this is true but it might just be possible to heat it up to a temperature hot enough to give it a roasted effect without burning it. With some buyers willing to pay so much more for patina, I c...
