Valuable and Beautiful Clock At Starbucks at 200 Water Street, New York City

 By: patrick_y : March 3rd, 2022-23:03
Hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people have seen this popular clock. But despite frequenting New York City since a young age, I never really noticed it. But the past two times I've visited NYC, I've stayed in the Downtown area. I normally stay i...

Hmm. I might've walked right past/over that one and not known it...

 By: patrick_y : March 3rd, 2022-23:50
I definitely have walked on Broadway in Downtown. I'll keep an eye for it next time!

Used to live there

 By: amarelli : March 3rd, 2022-23:15
The white building behind the Stsrbucks used to be an NYU dorm. We used to wait for the bus to campus right in front of that clock. So strange to see it admired.

Yup! That was a dormitory! It's now a mixed use office building and luxury apartment building.

 By: patrick_y : March 3rd, 2022-23:46
To my knowledge, NYU still owns the building, but it's being managed by an external company now. They probably had this big clock so students would remember not to be late for class! (joking) Thanks for commenting! What are the chances that someone who us...

Very cool indeed!

 By: patrick_y : March 4th, 2022-01:44
It'd be "too cool for school" for me. I'm trying to make a pun, since the building and the clock are owned by NYU.

Are you starting to like staying downtown? Way more food options πŸ˜€

 By: Fastwong : March 4th, 2022-01:31
Funny, I almost rarely make it above 23rd street but I went to midtown today to see what Cellini does (or doesn't) have in stock. The independent side of the store felt very.... Empty πŸ™„

Hmm... If I lived in Manhattan, I'd like the idea of living downtown!

 By: patrick_y : March 4th, 2022-01:41
Downtown is so quiet at night! It's busy in the morning as people go to their offices (well, not anymore due to COVID), but it's very quiet at night! Might be a good place to live in my eyes. I didn't eat very much in Downtown. I was forced to go on a die...

Sounds about right! I've always liked the low rise dense restaurant life between Chinatown and 14th Street. A little dirty maybe but all the food options πŸ˜‚

 By: Fastwong : March 4th, 2022-15:15
I would have thought it was all good times for the Cellini guys too but they were a little salty about the market. The hottest market ever but no inventory to sell, brands behind on shipping existing allocations, and lots of angry and impatient customers....

Indeed! And a huge distrust between you and your customers, as some customers are reselling!

 By: patrick_y : March 4th, 2022-17:05
These reselling customers are sometimes making more margin than the store itself!

Funny and educational at the same time.

I haven't seen anything like this one before, but I sure did indulge in some one-off public space clock designs over the years. I'll make sure to share some pictures of L.A. area public clocks when I get the opportunity! Cheers, Filip

I thought so when I saw it...

 By: patrick_y : March 4th, 2022-17:08
I didn't know it was there, just walked by and found it to be kind of cool.

Perfecto!

 By: amanico : March 4th, 2022-18:02

Do you like fountain pens?

 By: patrick_y : March 4th, 2022-17:11
There's a store in the downtown region called "Fountain Pen Hospital" that was special. A lot of other things too, just depends on what you like!

Hmm...

 By: patrick_y : March 5th, 2022-17:58
Still lots to see down there! If you're into architecture (some really nice buildings, the Frank Gehry apartment tower is nice), old office buildings (City Hall Administration buildings), museums, watch stores, nice restaurants, lots to do in NYC. The dec...

Must see that in person. (nt)

I concur!

I lived in NY during my studies in late 80s yet...

 By: Centurionone : March 4th, 2022-22:42
I 've never heard of Conheim's clock until your post .. what does that say about me??

It's ok! You can always visit again!

 By: patrick_y : March 5th, 2022-17:51
That means you were likely a diligent student. Never venturing out, and always enamored in your studies! Am I right?

:-)) You are too diplomatic and kind Patrick..

It's a miracle I graduated with honours ( magna not summa ) to be honest!

Not a surprise to me!

 By: patrick_y : March 5th, 2022-22:01
It's easy to identify that you are a learned man just from your interactions on this site. Therefore, I'm not surprised you graduated with honors! Not to mention you are a man with exquisite taste! And I'm not even being diplomatic about that!

Next time I am in California, we must meet up so I can repay these kind compliments over drinks or a meal !

I would love that! Thank you!

Always a pleasure to meet other WatchProSite members!

Last time I visited (December) I went to Governor's Island for the first time, on a chilly weekday...

...when hardly anyone else was on the ferry. Circumnavigated it (on foot) and had a fine bratwurst from the little outdoor food place (I was their only customer in sight). What a good time! I may go back in a month or so. The problem is, my favorite NYC c...

I'll have to try one of those Gray's Papaya hot dogs!

 By: patrick_y : March 7th, 2022-07:42
Been told to try it many times. Haven't gotten around to it yet! Which chocolate place is your favorite?

You can't have just one dog there, gotta have two

 By: CR : March 7th, 2022-12:45
The thing to get is the 2 dogs + a drink (both w/sauerkraut, 1 w/ketchup, 1/mustard, and the classic papaya for the drink). It's a package deal. The chocolate place I like is Laderach, I think on Lexington around 58th St. I get several little pieces of ch...

Ahh! Yes, I've been to the Laderach on Lexington and 58th.

 By: patrick_y : March 7th, 2022-17:28
The Laderach on Lexington and 58th is too expensive for me unfortunately. In Geneva, it's around 80 Francs per kilogram. In most of Europe it's only 70 Euros per kilogram. Thus, it's actually cheaper to buy Laderach in a city like Vienna or Berlin than in...

The high price is the only thing that allows me to control my intake! :)

 By: CR : March 8th, 2022-14:38
I'd be in trouble if it were cheaper. I was at my local Laderach with a friend (fellow collector on this forum) a few days ago, and he got 1/4 pound for something like $14-15 USD. If you want to try some fun chocolate treats, visit the website for bonbonb...

Try LA Burdicks

 By: patrick_y : March 8th, 2022-17:52
Unfortunately Burdicks, which is located in Boston, is very expensive. Around $80 a pound! That's about double Laderach's price in Europe, as it's around 70 Euros a kilogram!

Burdick's has been my go-to place for hot chocolate (winter) and iced chocolate (summer) for decades...

 By: CR : March 8th, 2022-20:03
Their Boston store is located in what is increasingly becoming "watch central"! It's a frequent destination when visiting the stores.

Ahh. I make my own hot chocolate!

 By: patrick_y : March 8th, 2022-20:35
So easy! Just put in semi-sweet 51% cacao to 60% cacao chocolate chips into a saucepan. Then milk. Heat. Stir or whisk until the chocolate is dissolved in. So good.

+1! (nt)
