My wife’s grandfather
came to the US from Poland through Ellis Island and ended up in Pittsburgh working in the steel mills. He had an Elgin watch that we got after he died 25-30 years ago. I’m not Catholic and back then the wife and family would go to mass every Christmas Eve and he was too sick to go, so they left me to hang out with him ( I was like 25 ). I don’t know why but he loved me and I loved him too. We had a great time together. The watch makes me think of him.
Edit to the post if Lord Elgin watches are a different manufacture than Elgin I apologize.
Not a Patek Philippe, Reverso or a Cartier,
just my lowly Lord Elgin. For a watch from the mid 1940's it is in excellent condition and is as accurate, or moreso than many of my modern watches. Plus it is extrement sentimental to me. ...

the dial,does have some texture to it. Of all of my vintage pieces this one is definitely my favorite, and I have have several nice ones. This one and another run as well as any of my modern pieces.

If memory serves me correctly Lord Elgin is the top of the line
from Elgin, Elgin DeLuxe falls in the middle I think.
Wife’s grandfather’s would be entry level model, whatever that is.
I can post a pic although I don’t think most people here are interested in an early 1900’s mass produced watch. Your story just made me think of him.
My mom gave it to my dad the first Christrmas they were married,
1949, she bought it used from the dentist she worked for, couldn't have been but probably a year or two old when she got it. 76+ years old and runs like a new watch, accuracy is amazing,
