My take on the Habring2 Snail dial Chrono-Felix....

Apr 15, 2022,12:30 PM

I've immense respect to Habring2, when I say that I mean THE couple, THE brand, THE timepiece....all of them.

To their credit, since 2004 Habring2 has won 4 GPHG awards till date (no surprise here, Richard's mentor during his IWC days was none other than the great Mr Gunter Blumlein)

Ever since I saw the pictures of Habring2 Shellman Japan edition, I was trying to see if I would be lucky to find one...it is a 36mm Monopusher Chronograph with a rice bead bracelet !

Once I realised finding one is not easy, I reached out to Maria Habring to make one but there is no possibility to get a 36mm as it is 'exclusively made' for Shellman

But she proposed to offer one in the current ChronoFelix case & there was 2 dials left after Shellman edition !

There is no way, not to accept that....almost 4 months after I received this timepiece in early-March...

I can't tell how stunning this timepiece is, for the value it packs-in.
  • 38,5mm case in steel with monopusher at 2'O clock position
  • Snail dial with Breguet printed numerals
  • an In-house designed chronograph movement beating at 4Hz

In my opinion, the STAR of this timepiece is the Snail DIAL...

the layout is simple, Hackable running seconds at 9'O clock and the Chronograph counter at 3'O clock.

Breguet numerals is eye pleasing and incredibly attractive - giving a vintage vibe to this timepiece.

Many of you may recollect, Richard Habring designed the first IWC split-second chronograph movement that was introduced in IWC 3711 in early 90s, which was also used in Portugieser Rattrapante 3712 & Ingineur Rattrapante.

So when he designs a monopusher chronograph modular movement, there is no iota of doubt on my mind to pick one. It is finished industrially as a tool watch - there is no haute-horology finishing but I can confirm the accuracy is more than chronometer movement.

Another inspiring Habring2 Chrono Felix that remains my personal favourite is the Monochrome Edition with Salmon dial - thanks to our fellow 'watchonthewrist' on that.

You'll see how the same case (albeit brushed finish) with same movement but with a sensual salmon sector dial behaves entirely different !

Habring2 offers a great gesture offering a free engraving on the case back, a personal message to my son - I trust it will make sense over time in future.

Hope you have a great Easter weekend time with your family. HAGWE !

Best,
mahesh.,

I enquired in a similar way but did not pursue the matter hard enough, obviously. I'm in touch with one other collector who went the extra yards and ended up with the white dial variant. Lucky gentlemen!

I think you should still give a shot....

as long as it is within their product design, I see Habring is flexible to make something the collector likes.

Such great looking watches...

...my tiny nitpick would be to get rid of 'Austria' on the front of the dial.

that's really nitpick isn't it ?!

in deed it was manufactured in Austria, so I'm happy it is on the dial ;-)

Not when you've spent almost 40 years...

...as a graphic designer. It's just common sense. My Audi is made in Germany, I don't want type on the grill that says 'Made in Germany.'

Out of curiosity

What percentage of watches in your collection don’t make reference to where it was made on the dial?

Depends upon your criteria...

...many dials will say 'Swiss' or some such in tiny letters. Also, it's a matter of design and how the information is incorporated into the overall design (typeface, size, color, etc.)...

thanks Christian !

I cannot believe I missed this! Beautiful movement, and yes, the snail dial is quite tantalising! But I agree, that salmon dial sector is fantastic! I really have a thing about well proportioned timepieces in a sector dial and those that come in salmon!

thank you ! in deed one of the perfect sector dial chronographs...

JLC master chronograph with syringe hands was cool one but for some reason it was taken off the catalog soon.

thank you ! to clarify...the dial of Habring2 is printed one.
