Me... I have a core collection of modern or vintage watches which are with me for 16 years. I regret a few watches I sold, though.

Wondering...

How many purists have purchased watches and never (or nearly never) sold them and how many keep their collections in a stasis and buy and sell all the time? Added image of Kohei's watch collection ...

I have never sold one watch.

Some long-term, some buying but not much selling lately. I do need to whittle down the fleet though. I give away watches sometimes, or trade, to people who will be a good home for them. Cazalea

Buy and keep.

Research, consider, buy, keep.

But sometimes I wonder if I should shrink a little.

That is also exactly my tactics 👍

I have never sold

And I’m not really sure why. The idea of selling my watches is unappealing to me. My good friend does it all the time...maybe he likes to haggle...to each his own but I definitely think there is a psychology to both approaches.

I sell about one every two or three years or so.

I am more of a buy and hold type but I also want to keep the number of watches manageable so I can wear them all often enough, so selling occasionally makes sense to me. Best Andreas

+1. Teachers have been known to assert an optimal class size of twenty eight . . .

. . . above which managing tends to become increasingly difficult. The same concept applies to my collection: any more than thirty makes it difficult to give each one the appreciation it deserves. Art

That’s awesome!

I feel like mentioning a legend like Kohei should be done in hushed tones :)

I very rarely sell. In 25 years of collecting I've sold 3 watches I believe. Traded one. The rest have all stayed.

I bought and sold , but lately I bought more than I sold

The collection is growing, and my taste is getting mature IMHO. Nothing in my current collection that I don't like and want to sell. I still strive for a balanced collection (different case material, dial colour, function, etc). However, considering the c...

In short, I'm mostly a seller, but in reality is the evolution of my taste, and the desire to keep the collection manageable.

Less pieces, more joy... Any object that doesn’t make me happy, has to go!

paint a very interesting portrait of the collector. Not just aesthetics but deployment of capital, personal priorities, what one truly values (status, art of the deal, value for quality, unique function, science of horology) For instance there is a big di...

Buy and keep for a long period, but ultimately it was not sustainable.

I eventually had many, many more watches than I could wear or than I wanted to maintain. I reduced my total watch numbers drastically (at least 80%) and was well satisfied with the outcome. Since then there have been lapses of discipline, but my basic int...

sold a watch in my life. I've still got the first watch I was given, a Pontiac, what else ? I even keep the ones I can not longer use, like a couple of 1980's Edox Delphins. - Wover

I used to buy and sell a lot..

...back in my single days in my late 20s/early 30s I used to buy and sell a lot, but it’s because I was buying watches that I couldn’t afford to truly keep, and I wanted to experience as many as possible. Basically I had a certain amount of dollars in my ...

That is an excellent, honest comment...

I have always purchased a notch below what I thought I could afford (with the exception of Omega ie. I could afford to replace every Omega with Rolex or JLC etc but for me Omega is the best) so that I wasn’t perpetually worried about having to sell someth...
