Let's play a game: what would you buy for nautilus money?

After seeing the steel Nautilus trading for around 160-170k euros on chrono24 I decided to play a game: building a varied collection of grail level pre owned pieces for the same amount of money.

Here's what I came up with:

1) Lange 1 in platinum, it's my grail watch and had to include one, couldn't go for the darth because of the "limited" budget (~36k)

2) Blancpain Tourbillon Transparence: 38mm of pure rose gold goodness, with a sapphire dial and a big date complication (~36k)

3) Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Minute Repeater: the perfect reverso size with the coolest complication there is (~34k)

4) Vacheron Constantin Malte Platinum Perpetual Calendar Chronograph (–54k)

If this isn't a clear sign of the insanity of today's market I don't know what is. If given the choice and money was no object I'd pick any of these watches alone against a Nautilus, but nowadays you can have all 4 for the price of a 3 hand steel watch with a date and pins in the bracelet. That or a perpetual calendar chronograph, a tourbillon with a big date and power reserve, a minute repeater and a lange 1, all in either rose gold or platinum. Wow.

All great choices

I would likely invest the money, however if I am forced to spend it on watches...

it would be ones that I would of course want to wear and not ever part with.

😆 I just have so many I want on my list that I can get all at a fraction of the 160-170 Euros! I am but a simple man with modest taste.

Just seems a waste to purchase a meal for 10 people, when all I need is a meal for 2.

Or buy one extra and sell later for 200k and more

I love your list and yes they are a lot more “horlogerie@ than 1 5711/1A But I don’t think we’re at the top. Like it or hate it but it’s the most legendary watch on the market, or at least that’s what a lot of new collectors think If people pay 200-300-40...

So true!

I'm one of the few on this forum...

...that doesn't 'get' the Nautilus. It's an OK watch at retail, but I prefer the Aquanaut in any case. I think it's all hype driven by speculators. If someone offered to buy one for me, I would politely suggest other options...

I am with you.

This would be great, RD excalibur tourbillon skeletonized in blue. 42 so not a building on my wrist.

Great list, that Blancpain is superb!

I would also go for a grand complication like a perpetual calendar

Check of the grails

Lange 1815 chronograph - 45k~ Vacheron Overseas 3rd gen - 25k~ Rolex 5513 gilt - 25k~ I would hope I could get MB&F LM (whichever) for the remaining 50k

this is a very good question, and certainly not a theoretical one for me, as I've recently sold my 5711

Honestly, with prices as they are, I'm not buying anything with it. Very happy with my existing RO as a "Genta-esque" SS sports watch. Considerations have been a nice dress chronograph - a Gen 1 Lange 1815 chrono, a 5170G with Breguet numerals, a VC CdV i...
