When I was a kid, I was totally fascinated by watches & had posters adorn my walls. I specifically remember spending hours gazing at full page TIME ad of the Omega Apollo watch that had pride of place on the door of my bedroom. .
In my postgraduate years I had bought a Ferrari watch on an Alitalia flight in 1989. Suitably sporty & I wore it for years. As a doc I often get gifts, & watches are a popular choice. Hence, never felt the need to buy one myself. A close friends’ father had a long illness in my ICU, & on recovery gave me a Movado. Magic watch. IMHO, the pinnacle of stark design. In terms of pure uncluttered design, there was no way to go forward after that model was released. In 2005, I made an on the spur decision at an airport & spent some of my own money on a watch, a Tag Heuer F1. It was a nice sporty counterbalance to the more classic Movado.
Two years back I started re-manifesting symptoms of my childhood watch-lust disease & decided to get a mechanical one. Had more or less decided on a Steel & Gold Rolex Submariner with a blue dial. In the watch shop I saw this pic of a Longines which looked very eye catching. More a horology piece than a sporty one. After more than a month of indecision, I finally bit the bullet & bought the Longines. Love every minute of it. Suitably complicated, & also has classic blue hands & interesting dial work.
I’ve PP 5196P on order; the earliest any London dealer could get one appears to be Sept. I then need to take a break from this addiction.
