More seriously...

I now have 7 "real" watches (not counting the lesser crap hanging around in various drawers in the house...). I'm 43, so with luck, probably another 30 years or so of collecting, One new watch every 2-3 years would bring the death toll number to about 15-20 if you count the two or three you sell along the way...

I could also quote Conkers who, in a different post, told me: life is too short to have empty slots in a watch box... My watch box has 12 slots.

Or you just buy one Greubel Forsey and be done with it...

How many watches?

 By: Watch_This : January 27th, 2019-10:04
out of curiosity, how many time pieces do you have? I have 6 what I would consider somewhere on the luxury spectrum. Most of which are in the $3k range. My recent Glashütte and Patek purchases have brought the overall average up a bit. I have the Rolex Mi...

My experience tells me it’s better not to know...not sure how that will help you 🤔

One thing I know, for sure, is it will make your wallet shrink 😄

i was thinking to have 5 watches max...now've 4

 By: mahesh : January 27th, 2019-10:36
but i realized it is hard to keep a limit to things you love...so i guess i'll end up liking & buying at least 1 watch/year, that would be close to reality ;-) Best, mahesh.,

I think it's primarily about quality rather than quantity. Personally I own some 15 to 20 pieces, which sounds like a fair number, and they range from Rolex to Patek to Panerai, etc...

 By: FabR : January 27th, 2019-10:37
However, I almost never wear many of them, so for me this means that 15 to 20 is too many, and also that the average quality of my collection can be higher. On the other hand, the last three watches I bought are by far my favorite (some rare handcrafts fr...

I am trying

 By: Watch_This : January 27th, 2019-10:46
To buy with a purpose. Where is the hole in my inventory? Which brands do I want to own? I think I would be very happy at 8-10 pieces, Max. I am still new to luxury watches, but will have fun with it. At some point I imagine I will have too many, and then...

I think that's a good approach, except that after acquiring the Omega and the Milgauss you want, you might not be able to stop for "several years" -- or it will likely kill the hobby if you do.

 By: FabR : January 27th, 2019-13:52
As you say, for as long as we're passionate about watches (or shaving, or anything else), it's just good to try to constantly improve ourselves -- and this is one nice hobby to have ;-)

More watches than wrists. [nt]

I think that is for sure the right equation for the question: ‘what is the appropriate number of watches for me to have?’ Cheers Drew

10

A wise man once said "Know thyself." For some collectors, the pursuit is more pleasurable than the acquisition. For myself, the ideal number is 10. That number would be large enough for diversity (movements, precious metals, brands) and small enough for e...

I’ve given this a lot of thought

And I have concluded that the perfect size for my collection is X watches. Unfortunately, my wife’s perfect size for my watch collection is approximately X/12. Now, my wife collects beautiful Chanel handbags. She has also given this a lot of thought and h...

I like it Nick!

Good advice. One thing I have also learned in marriage is ‘‘tis better to ask for forgiveness than permission.’ Cheers Drew

C'mon you guys, let's hear the truth! I'm not seeing very many numbers

 By: cazalea : January 27th, 2019-15:48
It was an easy question and we are dodging it as if he's the tax man asking how much money we made last year! My answer is currently 106. Cazalea

It took me 10 days to count! :-)

REMEMBER THIS ordeal at yearend?

Currently about 30

 By: jml_watches : January 28th, 2019-10:10
Only as I may have put the odd one somewhere safe and can't find it! The number will only likely go up as I've never sold one. Cheers JML

If everything is included the number is large.....

 By: Jay (Eire) : January 27th, 2019-18:18
For example, do you count the 5 Sistem 51s? The 6 G-Shocks? The 5 other Swatch? That's 16 already and I haven't even opened the sock drawer let alone the safe! Then there's the vintage GS sub-collection, the vintage Seiko sub-collection and the Quartz Sei...

Count them all if they are devices that strap to your wrist and tell time

At the high point I had 13 watches. Funny thing is I only ever wore three of them.

I'm selling most of my watches but decided to keep the three I actually wear. I plan on being interred wearing one and the other two will be gifted to my nephews when they graduate from college. I really appreciate high quality mechanical watches but I ne...

Your post raises a good question that may deserve a thread on its own sometime

 By: NickO : February 5th, 2019-09:45
Should you keep a watch in the collection that you never wear? I go back-and-forth on this one. I have 16 pieces in the collection and five of them get 95% of my wrist time. So what about the other eleven? Well, they do give me pleasure from the tactile e...
