I'd have to start with Rolex Sub. (That's like butter or flour if you're making a cake.)

No. 2 AP RO (even if I did sell my 15002, I can not deny its place.)

No 3 Patek Calatravas from the 50's.

No 4 (having to think harder now...) Omega Seamasters from the 1950's

No. 5 Speedmaster

No. 6 Panerai, Panerai , Panerai--though I have never owned one as they do not speak to me--who can deny that they changed everything in the last 10 years?

no.7 Lange 1 Though, ultimately I find this watch too cold in any metal--Lange 1 put the Swiss on notice--finishing is in the hands of a new master--so is design.)

no 8 Heuer Carrera continues to be imitated endlessly and replicated.... and my personal favorite in my collection these days... of my few vintage pieces. (I am wearing the Heuer 2447 at the furthest right in that ad you featured... cool....!)

No. 9 JLC Memovox (one day I will get a rare dial... the right one has not come along yet for me.)

no. 10 Cartier tank. Never of interest to me, but who can deny the magnitude of its design influence? What an icon.

Hmm... I feel like I'm missing several more important designs... maybe we'll do a 10-15 at some point.

We all like top 10's so here is my top 10 iconic watch designs..

For me perhaps the ultimate factor in buying a watch is the design, what it looks like. If it catches the heart with its aesthetics, then other factors such as mvt. make and importantly cost come into play. some designs have lasted well whilst others have...

1/ JLC Gyro I. 2/ VC Skeleton Minute Repeater in platinum. 3/ U.N Freak. 4/ U.N Astronomical pîece ( on particular favourite, though ). 5/ Patek 5110P. 6/ Langematik Anniversary. 7/ JLC Duometre à Chronographe. 8/ Rolex 6542. 9/ Rolex Big Crown ( or Tudor...

...ICONIC design, did you say? Then... I would add: Lange 1 and its variations Lange Datograph Breguet 5907 or such simple ones Grand Seiko SBGW series Richard Mille (in general) ........ I very much agree with AP RO, PP Calatrava, Rolex GMT/Diver, Cartie...

As much as I agree with a large number of choices--especially the list with the OP--we cannot deny the Casio G-Shock its rightful place in the Top 10. It is perhaps THE watch that nourished our desire for large cases.....

a difficult task , there are many more designs that I love, but if I had to cut it down to ten these would likely be the watches that I'd go for ....... For non-manufacturer photos credit goes to the respective owners of the rights....

Your list is probably the most "faithful" to what you were trying to say about iconic designs as some may have confused iconic for, say, iconoclastic where the latter is more about going against the grain... where it may be on its way to being a classic.....

in the sense that his designs are completely his own. Unique. Groundbreaking, maybe. To me, 'iconic' would refer to long-established classic design that has had huge influence thoughout the watch market/world... (if a movie star, Marilyn Monroe. If a car,...

The Santos just one of the present interpretations of the classic Tank Francaise, the prototype of which was worn by General Pershing. The Santos is much fatter than the original and not the iconic Cartier, IMHO

The IWC pilot shouldn't have qualify based on design as the look of the watch was of military requirement. Many company offer the same model with the same look at the same era. For my humble opinion if were to choose a watch from IWC the portofino moonpha...
