Help / advice needed - what dive watch would you recommend for a five year old?

Aug 15, 2018,07:19 AM

Spending lots of time in the water with my kids these days, including getting our daughter to abandon any swim aids in the process.

Being her father’s daughter she started quizzing me about the watch I was wearing and got me to promise to find a dive watch for her for her fifth birthday. So I have about half a year...

So I could really do with some advice. It needs to be adequately waterproof to withstand swimming, diving into the water and splashing around. So vintage is difficult...

Then it would be optimal if it was 34mm or below and as light as possible.

A mechanical movement would be perfect but I would settle for quartz, if needs be.

Any ideas will be highly welcome! Thanks in advance smile

I get it I guess,

but have one question. Why does a 5 year old need a watch in the pool? It's not like they are going to look at the time and say "it's 3:00, I need to leave for my doctors appointment".

Granted :)

Still a promise is a promise and as it’s a joint activity that I enjoy, I wasn’t arguing

Point well taken.

Plus she'll be able to tell time on an analog watch, most kids can't do that today as they've all be raised with digital watches and clocks.

Part of the point, too :)

She has several watches already and the interest is there - not all the time but on and off it is

More likely Cazalea

I think a Rolex Submariner will do the trick.

She likes cars, too, am I right? On the big day, have the Rolex around the shifter of a new Lotus (any model, British racing green, naturally). And on the passenger's seat? A bottle of aged scotch, you have plenty of time to come up with something special...

In that case, the 5th birthday is not sufficiently far away :)

But very intriguing proposition nevertheless

My 5 y.o. adopted my Timex Bayman

It is cheap, fun, tough, and it’s purchase price goes to a non profit environmental group here in the US. Son loves the Indiglo feature, and while big at 43, it is light and comfortable. ...

That's a good answer. [nt]

Thanks for the idea, John :)

Although with her slender wrists 43 may be quite a stretch... But like it quite a bit on all other points

I gave him a swatch with Arabic numbers on the dial. He has learned the numbers and so far he is only using the “small” hand. He knows he will be picked up from kindergarten at “4” and he also can say if it is “between 4 and 5”. The other day he scolded h...

Great idea! [nt]

Like the Swatch idea...

 By: KMII : August 16th, 2018-11:19
I guess there must be some that are adequately water proof?

I got him this one

 By: ChristianDK : August 18th, 2018-03:48
It’s 3 bar waterproof and absolutely fine for a dive I a pool. This one is the small ladies model (24 mm) and is a good fit. It gets banged around and left in the garden sometimes. The crystal is completely scratched from being skewed across our tile floo...

That’s a great idea!

Will need to check what strikes her fancy but good advice on the Arabic numerals. Will let you know what it is when I get it

Easy answer!

Though I'll admit it's not much smaller than yours! Cheers JML

Need to check it out...

 By: KMII : August 16th, 2018-11:21
Will it not be a bit heavy for her, though?

Possibly - but liked the idea of turtle & baby turtle

 By: jml_watches : August 16th, 2018-15:13
It's a pity it's not smaller. Another thought is skx013 on a rubber strap might be a bit smaller & lighte. Plus piss a bit cheaper Cheers JML

That is a cool idea indeed :)

Will need to check out options... The SKX might be worth looking into as well

Swatch.

Anything under € 40,00. With batteries. And was machine proof.

Wash machine proof is certainly a bonus :)

She has two FlikFlaks and a Fortis Mini Flipper. While the latter is technically a swim type watch, even in its NOS state I am reluctant for her to wear it around water 50 years later

Serious answer

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : August 15th, 2018-13:35
She's 5, the flik flak line is perfect and can stand a dip. This is the best and you should get it for her. Not bad either ...

She has two FlikFlaks and likes them...

 By: KMII : August 16th, 2018-11:24
But I felt those would hardly stand more than a splash of water, i.e. washing hands. Need to check again, though - certainly a good avenue...

I second the idea of a Flik Flak.

While it's lovely to share our passion with our kids, your pricess is only 5 and she could 1. crash it, 2. being annoyed by mechanical movement's idiosyncrasies, 3. loose interest in watches. After some years, if she really likes the horo-world, she will ...

Thanks for the advice, Max...

 By: KMII : August 16th, 2018-11:27
You are right, at the moment the interest is intermittent at best. But I try to encourage it, when she’s the one initiating the topic. Need to see if there are any waterproof FlikFlaks - she likes those quite a bit. Thanks again for sharing your experienc...

Flik flak are fine in the washing machine, no problem for splashes.

Have a nice time with your horo-princess and don't forget to post some wristshot! Best, Max

Will do, Max!

It should not be something stopping her from play But your suggestions are excellent nevertheless - especially the 28mm model. Wasn’t aware of that one There’s also a 35mm Doxa Sub that’s a proper dive watch, if you want another couples watch for your wif...
