Game of Crown ๐Ÿคด๐Ÿป - What is the nicest and well thought out crown for you?

 By: Alkiro1 : September 20th, 2017-11:15
Hi all, We already talked about lugs, rotors and hands. So now, it\'s time to talk about crowns (only! Nothing about pushers) ๐Ÿ˜‰ We all know that a crown is an essential component of a watch. Small or not, with very different shapes and positioning but ess...

That two are among my fav , together with that RG ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜˜

Here are some:

The JLC Duometre crowns are very refined with the recessed logo. Grand Seiko also has nice recessed logos. Same goes for Credor (Eichi II). Onion crowns of FPJs are also visually interesting with the way the light reflects off it to give an illusion of a...

On this I have no doubt my favourite crown is the Onion!

You know there are lots of two-piece stems which result in a crown you can intentionally or accidentally remove

 By: cazalea : September 20th, 2017-18:03
However, it's not the intention or design of the watchmaker that the customer remove and replace it though. Cazalea ...

In this case, itโ€™s a design fault for me

Great topic my friend,

And great examples, looks pretty much covered to me! A note on the UN Freak, at least for the first version. Here the typical crown uses, ie winding and setting time, are divided between the bezel and the case back; the latter one used to wind and the bez...

Many thanks for the clarification my friend ๐Ÿ‘

What about ONE crown that can at the same time: wind the watch set the time, by moving the hours and the minutes start the chrono stop the chrono restart the chrono reset the chronographs to zero arm/ activate a flyback function ? Work in progress... Best...

Not a fan of vintage revival (at all...)

 By: ztirual : September 21st, 2017-07:23
Besides, as I wrote, it needs to have hour chronographs function + flyback. We are are not talking about pusher(s) here... Only the crown will do. =super crown. ;-)

thanks!

How about a few of the most "designed" but non-functional crowns?

 By: cazalea : September 20th, 2017-18:13
You know the one I mean ... That requires a tool to operate Only Alain Silberstein would do this to us Whereas Gerald Genta who should have known better built this tiny, recessed, slippery, virtually-unusable crown The food is good though. Cazalea ...

Unusable?

 By: JFT : September 20th, 2017-22:43
You should've tried rado ceramica automatic crown Totally slippery ceramic crown! Or... Try to wind a mido commander's crown... It's easy to peel off your skin while winding it... Credits to Google ...

The Radoโ€™s crown has no โ€œstructureโ€? ๐Ÿ˜ณ

 By: Alkiro1 : September 20th, 2017-23:34
One of the main rule you learn in watchmaking is: if you have no structure on your crown, you canโ€™t use it! Best wishes Alkiro

Exactly!

 By: JFT : September 21st, 2017-02:08
I think that's why I rarely have one for service for a whole year, the automatic one I mean. (Oooops) :p

I wonder if anyone forget these revolutionary Opus by HW

 By: JFT : September 20th, 2017-22:53
The goodie opus 3, that kind of crown tho how to operate that? Then this massive crown "cap" of opus 5 And opus 7 with literally have a functioning jewel (or some) outside the movement... One of most beautifully executed crown selector out there.... Well....

Hmm... The one I really want to handle the most is

 By: JFT : September 21st, 2017-02:14
The Opus 3 ... I mean, how to wind it, how to set the date and the time itself.... I mean, with that kind of "horizontal" crown... I'm not sure if anyone around the neighborhood got one to play around too tho, let alone play with it

Another thing is... How to make it a water resistant with that crown... You know,,, either those rigged rim are actually gears and connect directly with the winding/sliding pinion...

 By: JFT : September 21st, 2017-09:07
Or... It's like an usual crown that have stem (kinda) in the axis but tweaked gearing so it able to move up or down (?), but with that it needs a mobile/modular gasket to prevent the moisture/dust coming in?

Interesting article, my friend. One observation from my side

 By: crown comfort : September 20th, 2017-23:15
That Pusher mechanism of the RG may be interesting and technically challenging, but it reminds me of the that stupid Start/Stop button that now even the cheapest cars have. As often, keeping it simple and logical like it worked for a century with a turn o...

Thank you CC. Well, interesting metaphor. I tried it and I would like to know how it will last with time because its โ€œinternalโ€ mechanism is probably much more complex than a โ€œclassicโ€ crown

 By: Alkiro1 : September 20th, 2017-23:29
May be youโ€™ll have a lot of play with it after few years which could be a real issue for this timepiece. For the moment, I give to RG the benefit of the doubt and I recognise the great innovator this man is. Best wishes Alkiro

LOL excellent ๐Ÿ˜
