Why it’s dicey to strike up a horological conversation with a guy wearing a Rolex!

Fortunately for me though, the only hype Rolex that really appeals to me is the modern sub. And even then, I’m almost certain I’ll find a fault with it once on my wrist. Goes for others as well. I’ve tried on APs, Pateks but never really had a hankering for ‘em. 5711s and 15202s are lost on me like how the seductive power of Sauron’s ring is lost on Tom Bombadil.

Still about the horological aspect for me although rising values on my Rolex pieces do give me a perverse kick.

Currently, I’m at a strange place. I know I’m ok with what I have yet have this feeling that I’m not yet there. Nothing really appeals at the moment and I have no so called except for maybe a Reverso Rouge. And that’s not even really a grail. That would probably be a Roger Smith but I’m ok with that being a dream to be honest.

The good thing is I know what I want in a watch and sadly it doesn’t exist yet. Still waiting for a 38mm datejust 😜

Evolution as a collector ..

Being a watch collector for almost 30 years now I have identified many changes within me pertaining collecting watches . Previously I would never take no as an answer from a brand or AD and get what I want and in quickest time possible . Here Iam now wait...

Many times agree

I collect also for the passion. Price don’t care in a way, i am not focussed on high expensive watches. Selling is not an option for me, i am a watch lover and no businessman. I am more a life lover who like art, fashion, and music. Crystal bol. When the ...

I think it all makes sense

As you rightfully pointed out, the financial implications have become more considerable for in-demand brands/models, so prudency is not a bad thing. For each collector the journey is different, as it represents their character to a great extent. In my cas...

I know we are not supposed to care what others think, but your comment re “looking like non watch collectors while they actually are” is well taken.

Personally while I never had that feeling wearing a typical Rolex (and this sentiment was always a factor with Rolex ever since I got into collecting) I have absolutely had this feeling while wearing other of those supposed higher end super popular watche...

it has been similar for me

For Rolex, as they have always been super popular, the feeling has been very contained. But for the type of watches you mention as well, the feeling has been (unfortunately) overwhelming. I hope it all subsides at some point. All the very best, Alex

Hopefully Alex. But I’m not so sure.

And for me, I’ve made decisions on some of those watches which are likely irreversible. No regrets though, I didn’t need to carry “unwearable” watches.

Same for me

Decisions should be no-regret ones, especially based on wearing or not. If we dont wear them, it means we dont miss/need them imo. Have a great rest to the day, Alex

I think it’s normal to go through phases of watch collecting.

I think your patience that your experiencing is from force. You’re forced to wait or pay a premium in the secondary market. In times like these I usually sit back and enjoy what I have. I never like to get caught up in a frenzy especially like the one we ...

The most concerning aspect of this popularity and resulting value increases is safety for me.

Many of us acknowledge some hesitation in wearing watches (modern or vintage) which may have seen material price appreciation. The risk of course was maybe a ding or scratch or at worst losing the watch. But these last 2-4 years the real concern I think a...

I never give in to wait, I just get another watch.

I was mulling to get a AP or PP entry level SS watch last year. But after going around the boutiques and told join the Q. Screx it, I keep the money and get some thing I dun have to wait. We should let money work for you and not the other way round where ...
