Blue watches, why are they popular now?

Sep 13, 2018,16:59 PM

I cannot help but noticed this blue trend becoming stronger.

If I remember correctly, it all seems to kick off in 2016, when Omega came out with the CK2998 and the Master Moonphase Chrono, then we start seeing blue smile

Of course I might be wrong because the 2 famous watches: AP 15202ST and PP 5711 has blue, and especially their P version, more blue.

What comes next is the blue ceramic cases, Blancpain, blue dial PP 5930G, Blue SkyDweller, Chopard LUC PC, MING, Seiko Presage, ceramic dials...

Today, Volker's AP ROO has blue (VERY blue) and luca.rev's Eagle has blue....not a day without blue watches.

Why is blue dial or blue watches popular now? Or they has been that way?

The sky's blue, the ocean's blue, and the most common apparel, I think, jeans, is blue.

Therefore, our eyes and mind is very used and adapted to blue.

Black, white are very popular as well but they are more traditional, do not have that various shade or radiant that blue dials can play.

Once a while, you will get Green, Yellow and Orange but these colors are not going mainstream.

How long can this Blue trend last?

Blue is now the next Black, what will be the next Blue or Black?

Even cars in Automotive pages are Blue today smile

What I've always wondered was,

Who made the 1st ever watch with a blue dial?!

The only watch i can think of is the Royal oak.

 By: rip9er : September 14th, 2018-05:06
Is it the first? I donโ€™t know.

That would seem to be a pretty good guess.

 By: Brandon Skinner : September 14th, 2018-10:43
Can any of us think of something from the 60's or 50's with a blue dial?! I personally cannot!

Red next?

 By: fernando : September 13th, 2018-17:16
Look at EdTonkin's . FPJ. ...

That is a stunner, and so are your nice Trio too...I didn't know Omega make that red.

 By: Clueless_Collector : September 13th, 2018-17:18
but you also got their blue ceramic dial as well, right? Thanks for chipping in, fernando.

The Omega is ..

 By: fernando : September 13th, 2018-17:24
a limited run for the Japanese market I believe. Yes, the Tresor with the blue enamel dial. Blue is a popular colour and I also fell victim to it's allure with more blues in my collection than any other colour. Cheers fernando

Thanks for this great composition, it certainly provides some compelling evidence for your argument! :-)

I got curios and thought of my own watches... ironically, today that the theme of the week is the pieces we rarely show here, I found that my only watch with a purely blue dial (Boccadasse has lots of blue, but many other colors as well) is the very first...

Your blue dial Datejust looks fabulous

 By: henryrover : September 13th, 2018-17:34
I think Rolex makes one of the most attractive blue dials in the watch world ...

What size is this DJ?

 By: jomni1 : September 13th, 2018-23:26
41 or 36?

36mm 16220

 By: henryrover : September 14th, 2018-01:16
No message body

Gorgeous blue dial and now you have quite a few most rare and superb pieces....

 By: Clueless_Collector : September 13th, 2018-18:23
Envy of many ๐Ÿ˜ Your efforts in your career has paid off handsomely, congrats ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป Thanks, Fab.

I agree Black is more traditional while Blue looks younger and more casual

 By: henryrover : September 13th, 2018-17:30
A few blue dial watches makes ones collection more lively, but I will stick to Black as the "base" color of mine, especially steel case watches

Young, and definitely everyone yearns for the elixir of youth...

 By: Clueless_Collector : September 13th, 2018-18:29
And therefore Rolex will be a great choice. Thanks Henryover.

Blue is as old as the sky and as deep as the sea.

It's not a fad, or so I say, at least.

Thatโ€™s great explanation ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

 By: Clueless_Collector : September 13th, 2018-19:01
I think itโ€™s here to stay too ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

The blue trend started way back

 By: reintitan : September 13th, 2018-18:00
way before the Omega CK2998 LE came out. It was in the mid-2000s I believe when the floodgates opened and blue dials became at least secondarily familiar with watches as black dials. I recall sometime right before the Speedmaster LE Gemini 4 blue dial cam...

Toilet blue tabs, lolol....what a trend.

My watch bug really grow and started in 2014 when I joined PuristSPro and with the advance in internet accessibility and useful speed. No doubt about your facts... I see now itโ€™s safe to get more blue watches ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

IMHO Blue is perceived to be more majestic

 By: Gelato Monster : September 13th, 2018-18:15
I remember Blue usually comes with Platinum

Majestic, I thought, goes with Purple, like royalty...

 By: Clueless_Collector : September 13th, 2018-19:14
Blue with Pt may be a design theme to be cool and glaciers. Thanks for the input.

Purple is even more majestic [nt]

 By: Gelato Monster : September 13th, 2018-21:41
I suppose it depends on which culture and what is considered rare colour at that period of history

+1 Purple(Mid Variant of Blue/Red) was the color of Royalty amongst the continental Euro. Choice of Color is very cultural thing - Green amongst the MidEast, Red in SEA

 By: redcorals : September 14th, 2018-06:16
... and so on. Since social media took central stage, Blue has emerged as the most indulgent of all which can mostly be attributed to Collective behavior and Conformity. I have to say sometimes I wilt a little now if I see another blue suit - another medi...

Apologies...

The "blue whale" is a 60mm blue dive-style Invicta watch that is passed around among members of Watchuseek forum.

No worries....thanks for the explanation...Invicta is bold I agree...

 By: Clueless_Collector : September 14th, 2018-07:12
And itโ€™s got its fans, quite a success story imo.

Love the blue face.

 By: Wojo : September 13th, 2018-18:39
A few years ago I was looking at Breitlingโ€™s B2 and Hercules and was amazed on how many were available with a blue face. At the time I ended buying a Zenith DeLuca ( you guessed it, also blue faced) and couldnโ€™t be more pleased with the look. While I love...

Super cool picture ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

 By: Clueless_Collector : September 13th, 2018-19:16
That is quite a rarely seen Zenith, looks great and a keeper Iโ€™m sure. Thanks, wojo.

It's not a new phenomenon as seen in 2004

 By: MTF : September 13th, 2018-19:15
RaymondS, Here is a Brightz Blue watch from WAKO store in Tokyo circa 2004..... MTF Seiko BRIGHTZ Chronograph 2004 Limited Edition ...

Iโ€™m sure there will be a blue watch by some major brands every year...

 By: Clueless_Collector : September 13th, 2018-19:24
But if every major watch fair, there is a striking blue star, then itโ€™s a winning formula. Eg. Aquanaut 20th 5168G, 5650G, Nautilus 40th anniversary, Omega 2016 CK2998, Rolex 2017 SkyDweller...2018 PP 5740G Rgds Raymond

Does not apply to me.

 By: MichaelC : September 13th, 2018-19:34
My very first high end watch was a Panerai 87D. That was 2001. I had no black, no silver, no nothing... just a Blue Bomba

Well, I was only saying blue is not a trend for me.

 By: MichaelC : September 13th, 2018-20:12
I started with it!

Blue's not new. But your 5000 posts are!

Congrats! Now more lobster and cheeseburgers and french fries.

It didnโ€™t fly till this year, wonder why?

 By: Clueless_Collector : September 13th, 2018-22:20
I know there was a different thread talking about spill over demand. Iโ€™m just noticing every Baselworld or SIHH in recent years, there will be a blue watch in high demand. As my reply to MTF above, look at PP 5168G, 5650G, 40th anniversary 5711p/5976g and...

I agree there is most definitely a trend

 By: ChristianDK : September 13th, 2018-22:45
You find it in clothes as well. Indigo dye with trendy Japanese brands. Prada promoting black with blue for years - something that used to be a big no-go. For me, I own 3 blue watches. But blue has always been my color since I was a child. It carries a sp...

Its just a very attractive color imo ๐Ÿ˜‰

That is quite an impressive line up of blue watches ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

 By: Clueless_Collector : September 13th, 2018-23:11
Very very attractive indeed, so itโ€™s a long lasting color.

You have some very nice blue watches

So, blue has been around for a long time and is here to stay i think. Back in the day it was reserved for Platinum cases (PP and IWC ) but now it sells more watches as a 2nd or 3rd iteration of a model in years after introduction ( Black Bay ) What does s...

Definitely there will be blue watches every now and then...

I only noticed in recent years of major watch fairs, the sought after and high demand watches has been blue, see my reply to MTF and ChristianDK above. Thanks for the input....and agree a splash of orange is here, like ultraman and new Aquanaut 5968 for t...

Thanks Raymond, maybe designers are now looking at the 70`s for more inspiration after all the recent 60`s re issues ? The 70`s brought a lot of colourfull watches and funky designs.

 By: Ron_W : September 20th, 2018-23:58
And orange was very popular in the 70`s in many watches as well as interiour design. Although i do hope it doesnt get back into swing with seats and sofa`s โ€ฆ.

Thatโ€™s true, recent years is all about reissue and tributes too, good point.

 By: Clueless_Collector : September 21st, 2018-04:44
Maybe designers ran out of ideas ๐Ÿคฃ or the used market and auction prices for them are too good so brands capitalize on the trend. Well itโ€™s a free market and consumer is king now.

Blue isnโ€™t a trend.

 By: rip9er : September 14th, 2018-05:44
Traditionally blue was reserved for platinum or special edition watches which to some extent it still is. The right shade of blue for me blends much better with steel than standard black. Decide for yourself ...

Youโ€™re right, and I think blue is easier to work with to make the watch more attractive...

 By: Clueless_Collector : September 14th, 2018-07:09
In this example I will take the blue dial too....Thanks rip9er.

Do seem to be more

But is it that blue is different to the norm - black/white, but is safe enough esp compared to say red, green or orange? Have 3 blue watches Poljot alarm - had it for something over a decade ubiquitous Seiko 5 I also got distracted by a vintage blue memovo...

I think blue can have various shades that makes it radiant, like your Seiko Diver ๐Ÿ˜‰....
