Unless there is a specific reason to only advance, it is preferable to take the short route

to your desired time to minimise wear on the cannon pinion.

Using the drag here to stop non-hacking movements also does no damage.

So do not worry friends, none of you have done any damage/wear by winding backwards.

P.S. I checked and yes, FPJ instruction manual says, "strongly recommended not to turn the hands anti-clock wise". It also says get serviced every four years. lol

Time Setting, Forwards or Backwards??

When setting a watch is it OK to turn the hands backwards if you are adjusting for a few hours difference? I put on a watch I hadn't worn in a while today, the time it read was about 1 PM, (it is a GMT watch) I turned it back to 8 AM rather than turn it f...

backwards/forwards

I'll be interested in others' responses. I've always felt free to move the hands in either direction, with two exceptions: 1. In most movements, the date etc. complications will account for adjustments made forwards but not backwards. But that doesn't typ...

Oh dear 😱

I always adjust my watch which ever the most convenient. I hope I have not ruin my FPJs.. I admit I didn’t read the manual because I own simple time only function. I will take note from now onwards. Thanks Nico for the tip. 🥂 jen

I always go forward....

So, it it happens to be stopped at 2 AM

it's perfectly fine to go backwards to say, 9 PM without damaging the gear train involved in the date change??

As I said, unless there is a specific reason.

I don't know your watch. If in any doubt go forward.

Not sure why

But my owner's manuals advise to always set the time by adjusting forward.

watch with a date...

when it stops, never sure if it's AM or PM on the dial so by convention I do the following... advance until the date changes, stop at 6:00 AM, quick set the date-day of week to yesterday, set the relative GMT time, then advance to the current date & time....

That's the way I do it also, I give 45 winds

from a dead start on automatics and until fully wound for manuals.

I asked the watchmaker at the nearby Omega boutique a related question regarding a vintage Omega I have with no hack feature. Is it ok to hold the second hand with counter pressure

on the crown. At least on this particular movement he said its ok but if you use enough counter pressure to make the second hand move backwards you will "splash" lube into areas it shouldn't reside in. Another thought of mine is that my intuition tells me...

No problem with a time only. The only problem can be the date. For most of the perpetual calendars, the only way is to set them forward ( with very few exceptions ).

With a simple date, it is safer to set it forward, too. Safer doesn't mean that you cannot set the date backward, but the mechanism of the date may not like it. Best, Nicolas
