I watched a Micheal Blakey video the other day about a Reseller in NYC and it got me to thinking about the often overlooked “experience” when buying luxury goods.
In recalling an older Jean Claude Biver interview I recall him talking about the experience and how in the early days it was all about the personal connection and hand delivery of a piece that was the best part of his job.
I cannot talk for everyone but it got me to thinking how such a service no longer exists or appears to be much rarer these days unless You are a VVIP.
I have been fortunate to be in the position of being able to buy lots of luxury goods be it handbags for my wife, watches, Shoes or jewellery for us both. Mainly the translation takes place in a boutique or AD whilst other times via DHL and the Grey market but apart from say twice perhaps 3 times have I ever left thinking about the wow moment of the “experience” apart from say the overwhelming joy in getting the piece. There are some exceptions of course be it a simple coffee or glass of water and perhaps in some of the better experiences a glass of champagne or two and lengthy chat but on many occasions it has almost felt like a conveyor belt transaction and in our desire to get something we have somehow become accustomed to accepting this.
What are your thoughts and experiences and where do you place the “experience” in your list of buying must haves.
* one of my favourite “experiences” has been with this brand, glasses of champagne, some gifts, a long chat and offers of golf days etc
