The RM Nadal series is impressive for sure

Dec 01, 2022,06:12 AM

The marketing of the RM Nadal series is mighty clever, as it plays on my expectation that Rafael Nadal would not wear a watch for any amount of money during a match, if it affected his game negatively. Whether that's true or not is another story.

I think that's the only watch worn by a sports great that has impressed me.

I'm definitely not immune to marketing though. I'm aware that Michael Jordan, Robert Downey Jr. and Mohamed Salah owned Urwerks at some point, and I happen to be impressed with the UR-210 Full Metal Jacket.

I'd also be interested in less obvious endorsements, like a sports celebrity wearing a Charles Frodsham watch, because I happen to love those watches and just out of curiosity, I'd want to know how a sports celebrity endorsement would affect a brand like that.

Which watch worn by sports greats made you feel so impressed?

Many sports greats like to collect different watches, even worn watches during competition. Which watch worn by sports greats made you impressed? For me, Richard Mille worn by Rafael Nadal definitely, as this is one of the world’s lightest tourbillon. So ...

The weight of the watch makes no difference...

...the players are paid millions to wear them, that is all that matters.

Rolex doesn’t pay their ambassadors very highly.

Rolex doesn’t pay their ambassadors highly. But the ambassadors do get an annual stipend of free watches.

I agree with you completely.

The Nadal-RM collaborations are to me the most impressive, and the one you chose to post a picture of specifically happens to be my most favorite . Thanks, Filip

I’m honestly unimpressed by any ‘greats’ sponsoring watches, or at least the watches that I would buy…Patek’s no-ambassador philosophy is the winner here (basically, you buy a Patek in order to look like…yourself, not someone else! ;-)

But if I had to stick to Richard Mille and one of its ambassadors, then let me go all in with this football player!😉 Odell Beckham, who received lots of attention for wearing a RM during a 2019 game ...

I agree with you completely....

 By: InHavenPro : November 28th, 2022-04:35
but when a collaboration yields something truly hyper-specific, at the highest-end of horology (like the Nadal-RM watches), I feel that there is plenty enough substance (both technical and design) to make the effort worthwhile without any cynicism! I had ...

To be honest I don’t follow football, but that was pretty interesting when it became public! ;-)) I guess certain brands also lend themselves more naturally to collaborations (e.g., RM also as a form of technical demonstration)…

 By: FabR : November 28th, 2022-04:47
However, I generally just can’t find it appealing at a high level. It actually seems common, quite reasonably, for the top brands in several areas not to have these reps/ambassadors (Patek for watches, Ferrari for cars, I believe also Hermès for accessori...

One of the most obnoxious ones is indisputably Clooney and Omega which has been going on 'forever', and similar ones like Kate Winslet for Longines, Theron/Pitt/Travolta and others for Breitling etc........

PPs none-ambassador strategy

 By: penfriend : November 28th, 2022-08:30
is somehow interfered with Tiffany's "Patek ambassadors" Beyonce and Jay-Z. Wonder whether PP had to agree to this

Hype/success aside of their Patek sales, including the reference whose name may not be spoken (on which T legitimately capitalized in terms of image), T is “just” an AD for Patek, even if it clearly enjoys a close relationship since the 1800’s…

 By: FabR : November 28th, 2022-11:22
I didn’t even know Beyoncé and Jay-Z were specifically involved with watches for T (I really don’t follow these things), but of course I recall Jay-Z immediately letting the world know he was one of the “cool 169” last year (same for Di Caprio, etc.). For...

Agreed. That was really poorly executed.

 By: patrick_y : December 2nd, 2022-01:44
It actually makes me see Patek Philippe as a watch for a crowd I don’t want to identify with. I hope Jay Z is a lovely individual with a pleasant disposition in real life, but in the latest Tiffany advertisements he looks like a battle hardened gangster i...

Agreed. Patek Philippe doesn’t need a celebrity mercenary.

I do like the cool and meaningful design collaborations done by Bulgari with Japanese architects. Those were done well.

Indeed.

I was really surprised Vacheron Constantin (my favorite brand to compare to Patek Philippe) had Ora Ito as a brand ambassador. While I like most of Ora Ito’s work, I was surprised of the move by VC. Why do they need it? They know they’re amongst the best ...

None. for me seeing a great high-profile sportsman with a pumped watch is a turn off.

 By: MilDiver : November 28th, 2022-05:14
I ooze PR and nothing else. It is so "bold" to such level that not only it turns me off, but I also don't "trust" the story of reliability they are trying to demonstrate and make me sceptic of its true handling on the field. I do like a real man's watch o...

I'm only impressed when I see a picture of a nice watch on a cat's paw.

"That's a very patient cat!" is what I think.

None, such an ABUSED term nowadays imho.

 By: enjoythemusic : November 28th, 2022-17:20
The word 'heros' is such an abused term nowadays. So tell me, how is someone playing sports for millions in currency a hero??? Seriously, i'm curious what they have done to honestly deserve being called a hero.

So true.

Sports have been elevated to an art form. And the athletes are the artists. As have chefs. Clothes designers. Watchmakers. Even car designers. People need to market themselves. PR and media is all the rage. What do you think about musicians who collect hu...

I love and admire a watch for its own sake. Or not. Having a celebrity and/or ambassador wear a watch doesn't affect me at all. I often even notice the opposite instead of the desired effect on me: an ambassador connection with a watch brand might turn me...

it depends on the cooperation format

 By: Jakobbb22 : November 29th, 2022-03:40
I think some watches’ cooperation is meaningful. Yes, some athletes will be the official endorsement only, but some of the cooperation also record the remarkable moments or memories for the athletes, like the spirit of never giving up. One of the examples...

I agree with you Jakob.

so impressive!

Woww, a few sports athletes will launch a watch brand with other watch brands.

Yes I know Melofaith too

 By: Louise919 : December 1st, 2022-05:21
I knew Melofaith has launched a new watch, Rare Ones Mechanical Watch. It looks fantastic too. It allows customers to freely build their watches with their favourite case colours by their preferences ...

Never impressed with celebrities.

 By: patrick_y : December 2nd, 2022-01:36
Perhaps the only celebrity who really knows about watches might be Pierce Brosnan. He’s actually assembled some watches and gone through the motions. Other than that…. These celebrities know shockingly very little about the subject and would not be seen i...
