That is such a kind thing to say. It means a lot. Thank you.

Time to move on? It's looking like it is

 By: Rosneathian : August 3rd, 2022-17:46
I've been looking forward to spending the summer on the cusp of the western isles of Scotland. Part of the purpose was to have some quiet time to reassess a few things at a basic level. I wanted to leave this effort as open-ended as possible in order to s...

I think this is a very natural and healthy evolution for a collector

I’m still early in my collecting phase and own way more watches than I will end with. But I will very likely follow your arc and pare down as I continue to progress. That being said, what are you doing with your Jurgensen 😉

Hi. It's not easy disentangling oneself from something that gives such life-affirming pleasure. It sometimes requires and external prompt. I think that's what's happening.

I'll back at home base in early September. My dear Ref 8, full set and overhauled by Venla Voutilainen just last December, will be up for grabs.

I didn't need a vacation in Scotland . . .

. . . to figure that out. I'll be on Medicare in a few months. Not all that many years left. Time to move on from the material and onto the ethereal. Working on my pool game is as satisfying as enjoying my watches. Maybe even more so. 😌

Very well said.

Lol

As long as it’s done with a smile, it’s ok to give up watches! The watches has to bring happiness and let go with happiness, if any of the 2 change then something we’re not doing right

I think we all go through this at some point.

I completely stopped collecting for about 2-3 years, was burnt out. And felt like I was chasing a rabbit that I would never catch. At the time we were focusing on kids and we were blessed to have three. And now that they are here and healthy I'm dabbling ...

You have touched a nerve

We recently moved my wife's aunt into a nursing home and spend two days a week sorting through and cleaning out her belongings that are stuffed into a 150 square meter apartment. She refused to part with anything in the 85 years she lived there. Admittedl...

You and your spouse are acting with wisdom and foresight. I respect that.

It's perfectly normal to become attached to habit; habit allows us to string together past, present at future. But as you say it may not serve our interests well when circumstances change or when confronted by something unforeseen. Holding on to things ca...

You can give some to me 😂

Brother, I have been there. Seems a natural part of the journey. In just two months I have sold or given away 4. Leaving me with a much more manageable 5 in rotation. It does feel a bit liberating if I’m honest. We’ll see where it goes from here!

I recall I thoroughly enjoyed the depth and simplicity of your first post, and I am enjoying this sequel as much --- despite it was already clear that, for you, settling down in this location was no longer in discussion! :-)

People say that places, objects, and/or other people (or lack thereof) can sometimes be cathartic... Maybe (?) give it a little bit more time before selling watches that are not as material as they look, given the beautiful (and conceptually nontrivial) c...

Thank you for your usual well-rounded thoughts. I always appreciate them. You are a true connoisseur and I do honestly agree with how you describe decision-making. I will of course weigh up options as you say...

... at the same time, I have a life-long tendency to seek 'liberation' from things I have built: countries, work, interests. Not everyone is the same this way, so this is not an approach that some may recognise or want. The changes can be disruptive and i...

I decided to reduce my collection last year. Here's what happened.

 By: Steve E : August 4th, 2022-01:08
Since about a year ago I sold 6 watches. However, along the way I purchased 4 watches. Thus I am introducing the concept of "net" reduction.

A net reduction is perfectly reasonable: reducing and refreshing at the same time.

I recently did something similar, and went from 40 to 30 while bringing a fresher feel to the new number. Perhaps that was a prelude without me knowing it, because now I feel ready to embark on a next phase: to go from 30 to maybe half that number and wit...

I read through this post several times before deciding to respond...

Too many thoughts are running through my head at the same time so I will try to sort them out and be brief. I think we all go through something like this eventually and some more often than others. Speaking for myself, I walked away several years ago due ...

Thank you so much for taking the time to share this account of a lifetime's journey.

This is the most enriching part of collecting for me - the deeply personal stories that are both beautifully unique and also a basis for generalisable observations. Yours is an illustration of why collecting is an essentially human endeavour; we apes have...

Thank you for initiating such a nice discussion

It is really interesting and mind opening. I am in my middle ages and can not call myself a collector taking into account the 5 watches I have. However even now, sometimes it feels meaningless to pursue some watches, always sparing some watch budget (whic...

Hi, and thanks for sharing these thoughts.

I think I understand why we human beings like to surround ourselves with exterior expressions of ourselves. So I'm not going to begrudge anyone who builds up an impressive collection of things, including watches. It just so happens that renewal sometimes ...

I just stumbled on this post today, late to the party…

I will keep our exchanges, mainly on Parmigiani but also on other watches, in the highest of respect. The way you approached watches was always with a sincere curiosity, open mind and a desire to learn and share your knowledge. As you open a new chapter i...
