Thanks for the free publicity ;) Your original question seems to be about the "value" of the watch itself, but now it seems you are focused on the premium

As for the watch, let's say you've worked your whole life to become the best in the world at a given thing. Because of the incredible labor and skill involved, you can only produce 10 pieces of such thing/year and need a team of people just to do that! How much do you have a right to value your work at? And if you are someone who cares about details, how much is it worth to have the best in the world made by the hand of a true master?

As for premium, the wait list is at least 4-5 years, but still quite unlikely to get delivery in that period of time. It is also a uniquely ordered piece. What it's worth to jump the line is, of course, different for each person.

I am here for several reasons,

 By: Thomas_3 : June 14th, 2018-09:56
one of them being to learn more than I do now. In order to learn on has to ask questions and pay attention to the answers given. Here's my question: what makes the Roger W. Smith watch currently on Collector's Market worth the $225,000 asking price? Or at...

Welcome to the forum...

 By: Cpt Scarlet : June 14th, 2018-10:34
the answer is simple economics, supply and demand.

So if Timex' were scarce and supply and demand

 By: Thomas_3 : June 14th, 2018-10:41
dictated it they would bring $225,000? Yeah, I don't think so. What internally makes it command so much?

Yes, indeed. If Timex's were scarce enough, and there was sufficient demand, they could command that price...

But that's a tautology. There is no intrinsic value in anything. Value is entirely subjective. Once you accept that principle, you'll understand (to a greater degree) all the insane pricing in the luxury goods segment. Cheers, John

I agree 100%. [nt]

Hello trm_tca, welcome here

 By: renerod : June 14th, 2018-10:55
There are several factors that influence the price. Among them we have rarity of course, but others like the number of pieces made, being hand-made and not using a production line, the techniques involved in the construction of the watch like guillochage,...

I am concerned that your question may

 By: sham1 : June 14th, 2018-11:11
be a borderline case against forum rules on pricing but I shall answer you nevertheless. RW Smith produces ten watches a year and his watches are made in a way forgotten by many and is terribly labour intensive. I would suggest you go into you tube and vi...

Well explained [nt]

So, the inflated price of the one on Collector's

 By: Thomas_3 : June 14th, 2018-11:35
is for the luxury of "having it now and bypassing the log wait".

Yes!!

 By: sham1 : June 14th, 2018-11:40
It is quite similar to the used prices for example of an enameled Patek Philippe world timer or a Rolex Daytona that sell well above list on the used market. The difference between these watches and a RW Smith is that there are hardly any RW Smith watches...

Well explained, Sham.

 By: BMR : June 14th, 2018-12:28
This is exactly what you see, albeit at a higher price point here, with Daytonas, PP 5711, PP 5167, etc. It’s what I like to call the expedite fee.

Can I just ask at this point …

Is this a wind up ?

Because to the Teacher.. he is one of the Holy Trinity

A good question to lure me log in and comment.

Out of curiosity Teacher,

 By: sham1 : June 14th, 2018-11:43
who would be your other two members of the Holy Trinity? Mine would be Philip Dufour and Kari Voutilainen but some may argue as Dufour does not really produce any more watches, the young pretender, Rexhep Rexhepi might have a claim to be in the Holy Trini...

Hi Sham, i think this is our first conversation in forum right?

 By: Teacher Yang : June 14th, 2018-11:56
But we agreed on our Holy Trinity! Me too Dufour and Kari. I still remembered when i first touched the Observatoire.. and i heard Dufour still make watches for his special clients.. I hope someday i can announce my Fantastic Four!

Yes sifu, our first conversation

 By: sham1 : June 14th, 2018-12:13
A pleasure to meet you. I too have heard that Philip Dufour makes the Simplicity for special people and I only wish he discriminated less and made more watches. I would gladly wait ten years for a Simplicity! Philip, if you are reading this, we met at the...

LOL Sham, i also like jap ladies..

I guess you have to go for pre-owned simplicity.. but now the price is........... Anyway, i look forward to your watch ok! Real Men Wear Series 2

Not sure if I am a 'real man', teacher

 By: sham1 : June 14th, 2018-12:38
but I just love beautiful watches especially if they are rare too!! I believe there is a certain pride and joy to be the first owner of a watch, particularly any watch from the 'holy trinity'. If I am unable to buy them new, then, I always console myself ...

Many simplicity owners were not first owner..

 By: Teacher Yang : June 14th, 2018-18:24
That also applied to owners of other watches for example, kari observatoire, roger series 2 and fp journe tourbillon souverain. But then again, there are many watches in the horology world we can choose to buy to appreciate it. I look forward to your futu...

Value, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

 By: NoH : June 14th, 2018-13:53
For me, even as a complete amateur here, Roger Smith is simply one of the absolute best in watchmaking today. The “value” in something like this Series 2 that our good friend Steve is the current custodian of, for me personally anyway is down to understan...

Thanks Niall! :-)

 By: sham1 : June 14th, 2018-20:10
It took me 6 years before deciding to buy the watch and with the 4 year wait, this decade for me will be known as the Roger W. Smith!

I am humbled dear friend!

 By: KamalRostov : June 14th, 2018-21:56
Guess I shouldn’t complain on my 4+years of waiting for a certain piece... Imo, beauty and value are two subjective scales that may not necessarily reciprocate one to the other. Fiercely embattled in the hearts of a prospective custodian... Nevertheless, ...

Actually in your case Kamal

 By: sham1 : June 14th, 2018-23:18
you have every right to complain because others waiting for the 5711/1A have not had to wait for 4 years. The RW Smith Series 2, on the other hand, has a standardised waiting time which all potential customers are made aware of before placing their order....
