Something permanent

For me I’ll still be wearing a mechanical watch at the end of my life. All the memories will still be there.

You can’t do that with an Apple watch. It becomes obsolete the moment an upgrade comes along.

I agree they are useful and practical, but not as a life companion. My iPhone can do more anyway and is always nearby.

I see a mechanical watch as a blank canvas and every adventure gets painted on it over a lifetime.

I’m not against technology- I’m making an excellent living thanks to technology! (I’m in the software business). But I need an escape from the never ending upgrade cycle. Something permanent.

I’ve reached an interesting personal tipping point with my Apple Watch, particularly with the new Series 4 LTE model. The device is just so useful, so beautifully made and so interactive, that I haven’t worn a mechanical watch in weeks, and I just don’t m...

....With the introduction of the IPhone X. Not because I don't Like the hardware, but because the phones started doing things I didn't want them to do at around iOS 10 or something. Happy with my Pixel 2 so far. So two reasons for not owning an Apple watc...

Mechanical watches are to be admired as beautifully made objects rather than being primarily used as devices that serve a practical function.

Good for you to be open-minded enough to try the new technology. They're meant to excel in user experience, and to be replaced when they're done serving their function. Still the old and new can co-exist. The key is to find the artistic value and mechanic...

I respect your view, if you are looking for function and efficiency, I totally understand why you’d opt for an Apple Watch and Tesla. The BIG BUT is a beautifully crafted mechanical watch and performance vehicle are about stirring the soul, how they make ...

Thanks for all the comments.

Great to see the different points of view. I know I’m likely an outlier here.

So when the batery gives up for ever

what will you do?

The innovation cycles today are faster than the life of the battery.

That’s hardly a concern for the Apple Watch as these are meant to be replaced. I don’t believe these are being positioned or purchased as heirlooms.

Enjoying both sides of the medal...

I appreciate your statement, my friend. I myself use the modern tools quite intensive too - knowing that I’m living in a never ending, even accelerating upgrade and update circle. On the other hand I use Oldtimers, mechanical watches etc. as counterpoints...

It takes a very special watch; or a very special concept of a watch; in order to get me excited. The Vacheron Constantin Tourbillon I wrote about is one of the few tourbillon watches to have excited me the past few years (the other being the MB&F Jellyfis...

I decided smart watches aren't for me. Phones and computers already dominated our lives, I don't want to give up more of it. I fiddle with my phones and computer settings frequently. It infuriates me when we have software updates some settings are changed...

The watch is fully customizable.

You can have it just tell the time or have it dominate your life. We get to decide what the watch does for us, just as with our phones.

I know
