To sell or not to sell

 By: mhz vph : January 9th, 2022-03:08
I have noticed that over the past several months, I have spent most of time wearing just one watch: my tiny, cheap, digital Technochas. The core of my collection has fallen by the wayside, despite the fact that they are all excellent watches. They are as ...

You'll likely receive as many answers as there are WIS

For me personally, I faced the dilemma between being a collector versus being a hobbyist and over time I've come down firmly as a hobbyist. I figure if a watch is gathering dust in a box, it's time to find it a new home. I have some watches that have stay...

This is my first time seeing the collector/hobbyist terminology

 By: mhz vph : January 9th, 2022-16:55
But I really like it. It's a good way of roughly describing what one tries to get out of watches. I agree with your focus on comfort. In hindsight I think one of my mistakes was not focusing on comfort enough. Certainly, this is tougher with vintage watch...

You can ask your self the following question: will you regret letting those watches go? Yes or no, here's your answer.

 By: Bobbe : January 9th, 2022-08:39
Yesterday I let my Tudor BB Bronze go. The 43 mm didn't suit me anymore, TOO bulky, almost no wristtime anymore. I swapped the Bronze for a BB58, and with 39 mm my sweetspot, this will be a long marriage😉

It's hard to know whether or not you will regret

 By: mhz vph : January 9th, 2022-16:57
Until you have already sold! I think in my case it will depend on what I buy after I sell those watches. If the next purchase is interesting and gets a lot of wrist time, then I doubt I will be upset with myself. If not, then perhaps I will regret the dec...

I would not sell

To much memories and emotions. Selling is out every bone in my body. When i feel no love for a watch, i know somebody who can be happy with a watch. Giving gives me much pleasure. I am a collector not a sales agent. I am even more a watch maker than a sho...

I definitely have a sentimental attachment to many thing

 By: mhz vph : January 9th, 2022-17:06
Especially from my early teenage years. Probably more nostalgia than any 20 year old has a right to 😂. I naturally expected myself to become similarly attached to my watches, but I just don't see it happening. I agree that it would be fulfilling for me to...

eventually, if I do not wear a watch I sell it or give it away

 By: donizetti : January 9th, 2022-09:57
not sure if that works for you. I do think, however, that a few months are on the short side for making such a decision, but if a year passes and you still feel the same way I would move them out. Best Andreas

Thanks for the advice

I agree that I must remember to have some patience!

A suggestion

 By: artconcept00746 : January 9th, 2022-10:27
Don't wear them for a month. Once the month is over see if you miss them, if you don't it's your first sign. Wear each of them for a week, one at a time. Is your love back? If it's not then it's time for them to go.

A good method

 By: mhz vph : January 9th, 2022-17:07
I think I will give this a try

Thanks to the arrival of my 17.09 a few days ago

 By: mhz vph : January 9th, 2022-17:08
I will be able to do just that! I think it will provide a good distraction from the others in the collection, and I will be able to see if my love for them returns.

My two cents and i really agree with most of the replies...:

To fund the "desired" watch i would sell the watches i dont love anymore.... The less expensive watches i tend to give away to family members and friends, but only if theyre watch lovers and wearers.

Thanks for the input

 By: mhz vph : January 9th, 2022-17:09
There are definitely a lot of interesting watches out there that I could add in place of the current ones.

Sell and get what you really want

Life is too short, might as well enjoy it while you still can!

Amen!

 By: mhz vph : January 9th, 2022-17:10
Thanks for the input

Sounds like they don’t do much for you anymore

 By: amg786w : January 9th, 2022-13:50
In this instance free up the cash, spend a fair bit of time choosing that one piece you like and can access and go for it- no regrets!

Appreciate the input!

 By: mhz vph : January 9th, 2022-17:11

Agreed

 By: mhz vph : January 9th, 2022-17:13
I think one of the main reasons I'm even thinking about selling is the allure of what comes next. There are a lot of great watches out there!

If economics are not a factor I would not sell those watches.

 By: Jay (Eire) : January 9th, 2022-14:42
There are a bunch of quirky and less broadly seen watches in that group. To me, again if money is not what we are considering here, these are watches that might bring joy upon wearing just a few times a year. And that’s perfectly fine. Now, if you can’t j...

Sadly, economics are a factor in this case

I'm having a few guitars built at the moment, and that takes some cash. I can say that I am a world class guitarist, while I am most definitely not a world class watchmaker/collector/watch scholar. As such, the musical pursuits always take precedent. 'Beg...

Jay's question was my question.

You do have other things you'd use the money for. You also said you haven't developed a sentimental attachment to the watches you've bought so far, and that surprised you. So I'd run the experiment that someone else suggested and sell the ones that are mo...

Okay, here's some heresy: maybe you're just tired of mechanical watches.

 By: mkvc : January 9th, 2022-15:55
The members of this forum enjoy them, but I think we would all acknowledge that they involve costs in both money and convenience. People don't necessarily keep the same interests forever. If you have moved on from mechanical watches, there is nothing wron...

I have many hobbies, and my interest in each one is always fluctuating

 By: mhz vph : January 9th, 2022-17:22
My interest in watches is no exception. I have had periods of months where I barely think about them. However, these lulls tend not to last more than a couple of months. I also don't feel completely burned out on watches; on the contrary, one of the main ...

Too complex for one answer. Sell the one you have..

 By: Ronald Held : January 9th, 2022-20:36
Worn the least or not some time. If you do not regret it, sell the next one, etc.

I like that approach

 By: mhz vph : January 9th, 2022-20:39
One at a time is nice and steady, all-at-once is very committing.

I agree with Ron

 By: cazalea : January 9th, 2022-23:55
Take it one at a time. When you figure out the right strategy, let me know... ...

+1!! (nt)

NT

Interesting question.

 By: Rhyzen : January 10th, 2022-00:19
My philosophy is simple: If I do not wear the watch, I do not own it. If I'm in your shoes, I will let these pieces go to someone who may derive greater satisfaction from.

I think this is a good attitude

 By: mhz vph : January 10th, 2022-01:19
There are definitely people out there who could appreciate and enjoy these watches.

Agree with Jay. Selling is always on my mind. Just lazy to do it. But just in case i need to..

 By: Echi : January 10th, 2022-05:49
Prioritize those that can be bought again even with a, gasp, slight premium.. also easy to move. It does mean having to sacrifice a bit of sentimentality but i;m ok with it. Why we take tons of wristshots :p

If they don’t have integrated bracelets….

 By: Andy_Mac : January 10th, 2022-06:03
….what about changing straps. Maybe a little simplistic but sometimes a totally different watch band can give a totally different vibe and a new lease of life. Good luck

A great idea that I hadn't even considered for some reason

 By: mhz vph : January 10th, 2022-07:37
At the very least a proper rubber strap or bracelet for the 7002. If I like it, then great. If it doesn't do it for me, then it's just as well since it'll help with selling it. Thanks for that one!

My pleasure…

…have a good one! 👊

You're in the early stages of terminal . . .

. . . watchitis . There's no cure . . . the fever has to run its course. Some survive, but once infected none are ever totally free of the virus. Even the hardiest feel twinges 'til the bitter end. ;-)

😂 not to worry
