Just read an article about how influential

 By: Thomas_3 : January 23rd, 2020-10:17
John Mayer is in the watch collecting world and how he can drive the price of new and vintage watches up. When he wears a piece in concert or a photo shoot dealers will start to hoard that particular piece in anticipation of rising prices.

Honestly that would put me off but

then that would make me as much of a brand slave as the idiots who follow. So I try not to give a flying monkey about what these ambassadors/influencers do. R

There in lies the conundrum

I wouldn’t want to be in any club that would have me as a member. Or more appropriately I wouldn’t want to be in a club that had any other members. I have the same problem with art dealers telling me what is important. Also Mayer once famously write IWC t...

So, he is a "resident columnist" for Hodinkee?

"Do you ever find yourself wishing you could tell seemingly massive, distant watch companies exactly what's on your mind? Well, our resident columnist John Mayer feels exactly the same. In the following open letter to IWC, John shares his thoughts – both ...

I hope that the watches you own, he show. And the watches you want, he do not show. When Eric Clapton wears a Rolex Milgauss .....

He can wear what he wants but...

I wish he would not participate in those video interviews where he unnecessarily hypes any given product. He should learn a thing or two from Eric Clapton re: watch collecting.

After his latest video with Hodinkee...

My AD told me he got five calls for a green dial Daytona the next day. That watch immediately went from "I can order one" to "unobtainium." Just one example of what happens these days when a celebrity wears a certain watch or hypes it in an interview.

In total agreement. [nt]

Which is one of the reasons we love him

BTW, where is this article? [nt]

Must have been this in GQ:

Who is John Mayer?

 By: Bobbe : January 23rd, 2020-12:14
just kidding guys )

Yep, he’s singlehandedly pushed the YG/Green dial Daytona into hype territory. BUT...

 By: Jay (Eire) : January 23rd, 2020-18:12
...all he said was it was a cool watch and that it was unusual in terms of dial and metal combo. And he’s right, it IS a cool watch in my opinion. And I’m certain there are plenty here that would likely express the same opinion. I’m not sure I agree with ...

"all he said"

By: India Whiskey Charlie : January 24th, 2020-07:57
If I recall he also said that watch will become collectable in the future. Regardless of what he said, people heard him and went on to a buying spree the next day. Lately, watch collecting is more about future valuations than enjoying what you buy and wea...

The problem is everyone but...

By: India Whiskey Charlie : January 24th, 2020-07:50
It starts with those who believe they should own a certain piece because someone else says so or has one.

Very true...

By: India Whiskey Charlie : January 25th, 2020-07:45
But for many of us this phenomenon in the high end watch industry affects us more personally than any other product. At least in my case and YMMV.

Agree. [nt]

Wow, a lot of bitterness in this thread!!

 By: pejp : February 3rd, 2020-14:50
The guy is a passionate watch collector, with a history of posting on several forums. I saw an interview where he mentioned buying an IWC 5002 in 2002, so it's not like he just discovered the bug yesterday. He gives his opinion, and he happens to have pla...

My 2 cents: I don't care what he thinks or says about watches

 By: cazalea : February 3rd, 2020-16:35
I don’t have to listen to his music or his talking, and I don’t have to buy watches he likes. The idea that someone who can play music (act in movies, etc) has any unique talent or wisdom whatsoever in any other area of life is known as: Argumentum Ad Ver...
