Would you consider owning the most accurate watch in the world?

Estimated price $16,000, Echo Drive quartz movement. Pictures courtesy HODINKEE I’m very interested in your comments, best, Tony ...

As my iPhone is more accurate...

 By: Cpt Scarlet : June 19th, 2019-05:11
probably not, as aesthetics mean more to me in a wrist watch.

Is eco drive the competitor to spring drive?

 By: ripper444 : June 19th, 2019-05:13
I'm not a big fan of how this one looks!

I will have to google this in depth

It's an ok watch just not at this price.

No apples and oranges. (nt)

Eco Drive is Citizen's light powered quartz technology (light recharges a battery)

 By: reintitan : June 19th, 2019-10:08
while Spring Drive is Seiko's mechanical automatic movement with a quartz oscillator instead of a balance and hairspring. Two different companies and tech.

Eco drive is about power source and spring drive is about the oscillator.

The technologies are addressing different aspect of watchmaking, so I don't think they are competitors.

Yes,true. )nt)

the sweep seconds hand on the spring drive.

Thanks for sharing this, I looked at the (very well written) Hodinkee piece and the topic is indeed fascinating, though personally I'm less interested in this direction of horology.

As a quick recap if someone didn't go through the entire article, the novelty of this Citizen essentially consists of refining the engineering behind the quartz of a watch, from a standard 2^(15) Hz frequency on which most quartz pieces run, to a new reco...

Yes, I would.

An amazing achievement. I like it very much. Vte

I'm not interested in Citizen

 By: cazalea : June 19th, 2019-06:52
Or moral fluidity Nothing against Jack, but if you search this you will see basically an infomercial by/for Citizen who originally wrote ads themselves for Hodinkee, provides tech support, art, watches etc and likely Hodinkee will sell the watches too. Th...

Wow, I wasn't aware of this ad...

Now even a genuine passion for watches, that many decent men and women around the world should feel proud to share, is exploited by some brand and "tied down" into moral confusion and political correctness... Let me join you here, in this beautiful year 2...

quartz is quartz

 By: InDebtButOnTime : June 19th, 2019-07:46
How is this better than a satellite connected watch for a lot less money? I get a solar powered quartz watch for $300... but not for $16,000!

after doing some investigating

 By: InDebtButOnTime : June 20th, 2019-08:32
I agree there is some impressive technology there. Also didn't realize that that particular version (for $16,000) was gold. Might be worth the high prices (various versions at different price points) if ultimate accuracy is your goal. Asthetically I feel ...

Not a fannof Eco-Drive as it requires sunlight to keep charged..

 By: Ronald Held : June 20th, 2019-13:04
And I am not out enough to keep one charged up. Also cannot justify the high prices

One is a slave unit with normal quartz time keeping ability vs one that's self regulated.

 By: nwk00 : June 19th, 2019-22:16
Is it better? That depends on your criteria. But they are very different creatures.

I would rather spend money on a G-Shock.

This watch doesn't have an alluring dial when compared to an Eichi. If it has a beautiful dial and half the price, I will consider.

I read the article and WOW

What a technical marvel and achievement. Like wearing an atomic clock on your wrist. Kudos to Citizen 👍. I would definitely add this to my collection.

There were from Bathys and Hoptroff. Only a few made from the first...

 By: Ronald Held : June 19th, 2019-14:45
And Hoptroff does not make watches, anymore.

Right, not yet ready for primetime. [nt]

Totally absurd pricing... Zzzzzzzz, I could not be less interested in ANY quartz watch.... Design is clean, very nice, but above 500-600? NEVVVVER.

Like many here, I will never ever consider it, especially at that price.

 By: eklektik : June 19th, 2019-15:26
Technically, obviously it is interesting and it is an achievement. However, i don't get its purpose as a wrist watch. If one loves mechanical systems, then one would get a mechanical watch. If one loves accuracy and one lives in the covered zone, then one...

If it was a few hundred $, I might buy it so I could set my beloved mechanical watches with utmost accuracy.

 By: vitalsigns : June 19th, 2019-16:49
But at that price...no way, even if I can appreciate Citizen's accomplishment. Cheers, John

Yea I would

 By: nwk00 : June 19th, 2019-22:19
But they will only be making 100 of this, so Citizen is aware of the limited appeal. Cost is also partially justified by the fact it's a precious metal. The titanium version is produced in greater number and less than half price.

Citizen and GSs speced for ~5-10 s/y are in the multi K range USD. Unreasonable to expect...
