Perhaps fear is the right response

Aug 27, 2020,06:10 AM

If we were once comfortable wearing a Rolex to the beach and today we are afraid, we should ask ourselves if our societal trajectory is the correct one.

When one chooses to wear an instantly recognizable watch, are they not putting themselves on a pedestal? If everyone has a clean path to status, it is one thing. Today though, we must recognize that many feel hopeless and do not see a professional career as a possibility. They may see taking another person’s life as their means climb out of the pit of despair and stand taller.

Sad....I don’t know what to think about this...

 By: Clueless_Collector : August 26th, 2020-09:28
Is it social media, or something else? It can happen to different brands too....what’s the point of owning if we can’t wear them safely? Does that mean we should buy only the stealth ones or wear a “wrist condom” like our dear Justin (holdenchamp1225) doe...

My biggest concern is the attention we’ll be getting...

It’s not the same anymore and we are being preyed upon unknowingly and constantly. The worst thing to a parent is to see their kids gone before them and I hope it’s not because of my hobby putting them in danger. Now I have to think again letting my son w...

I didn't think people carried guns on Dutch beaches...

This is sad, of course. I bought a Daytona recently for my son and told him to be careful when wearing it (of course, he is mostly staying inside these days). It might be analogous to days past when wealthy people had replicas of jewels made when going ou...

Yes....be careful as Daytona is one of the hottest watch and still is...

 By: Clueless_Collector : August 26th, 2020-12:51
It seems weird to me to get duplicate replicas but I see that purpose. However, it's not a good idea to let the fake vendors thrive or let them have a purpose to continue scamming....now these fakes are top notch clones, with boxes and papers that look so...

I was mostly kidding...

 By: mdg : August 26th, 2020-12:57
...but I'm not going to worry about giving business to the replica makers if it might save my life. Or we only wear Timex and Casio in public...

Casios and G-shocks are hot today as well, lol....

 By: Clueless_Collector : August 26th, 2020-14:17
just need some blogs to give a high review and auctions to promote it

Worst case if you're wearing the plated gold and be mistaken as the solid gold....

I think it's better to stay low profile if I travel

My best travel watch was a $30 Casio...

...alarm, multiple time zones, timer, etc. When I go into San Francisco I wear my current beater, a $20 green plastic time-only Timex. The only time I will wear my Rolex is if I'm in my home town or in Tokyo.

Smart move, you’re safe :) [nt]

I live in downtown Chicago, and sadly I rarely wear any of my watches when walking in the city. I’ll wear a Shiniola or maybe no watch at all. It will hopefully get better soon, but for now it’s best to be conservative.

I feel bad about that too...

 By: Clueless_Collector : August 26th, 2020-12:53
and the videos of people casually looting the shops just annoys me, so casual like it's for granted.

Happened a year ago in Knightsbridge, London, to a college student too...

 By: patrick_y : August 26th, 2020-10:25
www.dailymail.co.uk Happens all the time. And we don't always know that it was the watch, the murderer was after.

That is totally so not worth it...

 By: Clueless_Collector : August 26th, 2020-12:54
but like you said, maybe taking the Rolex is just to make it look like a robbery.

Right! Or sometimes the police only find a body... Nobody to tell them that their watch was stolen.

 By: patrick_y : August 26th, 2020-13:38
Let's say it's a mugging, do we know the person was mugged for his watch specifically? We wouldn't know that unless someone knew for sure he was wearing his Rolex at that specific instant.

In this case it was about the watch . The guy who got killed was trying to prevent the robber to get away if i am correct, it wasn’t his watch that was stolen . They got the killer and he confessed.

Its a horrible situation we are living in . I know how it is to get robbed (happend to me last year in spain ) Was there again last week and wasn’t wearing something fancy this time . Its to bad we can’t enjoy our things anymore but thats the world we are...

Oh my goodness...

 By: patrick_y : August 27th, 2020-09:42
That must have been an awful experience to be robbed in Spain. Yes, the individual killed was not the owner of the watch itself.

It made and still makes me angry thinking about it.

 By: Watchonthewrists : August 27th, 2020-12:51
It happened in a second . Couldn’t do anything at that moment. (Stuck in my car and seatbelt). Still i am alive and well , cant say that about that fellow Dutchman 😢. So young and all that drama because of a F...ing watch

Yes! Your health and life is more important than a watch!

 By: patrick_y : August 29th, 2020-00:40
But still... To get robbed while you're in a car. What a terrible feeling! I always felt safe in a car, but now I realize I need to re-evaluate that.

Crazy situation, but I won't accept that *we* need to rethink our lifestyles. Wearing our watches with attention, especially in certain streets or cities, yes; stop enjoying them, never! ;-)

 By: FabR : August 26th, 2020-10:54
Alas, a good point the article makes is that these violent crimes seem to be getting *much* more common, and widespread, in Europe, even in places that were out of the question up until just recently... I believe these horrible crimes should be followed c...

There is a limit to what I can enjoy with them just sitting the house safe, right?

 By: Clueless_Collector : August 26th, 2020-13:05
Yes, we have to be very mindful of what to wear depending on where we go that's for sure now. Hopefully they do get followed up and prosecuted and not just stacked under the pile...

This is why I only wear watches under long sleeves

 By: Uncle Chico : August 26th, 2020-11:26
And am very particular about where and when I "show" them. For me it is more of a guilty pleasure. Knowing it is on my wrist without anyone else knowing.

That's a good thought....once a while pop it out to admire it.

 By: Clueless_Collector : August 26th, 2020-13:07
I want to raise the awareness because watch collecting is not the same today...it becomes an asset class and very widespread attention.

I completely agree with you...

We need to take sensible precautions.

Ethical and moral relativism. When ethics and morals . . .

 By: Dr No : August 26th, 2020-11:29
. . . are relative, any action can be justifiable. Even if the benefit is a Rolex. Disgusted, Art

A big +1! ;-) [nt]

OK....I'm selling the moonshine gold :)

You're right, we should be able to judge the situation when and where to wear what.

As far as I know

 By: George Gently : August 26th, 2020-13:29
there was a group of 5 of which one was after the Rolex. Some voices in the Dutch press say, these was a drug related group, who were after money. Nowadays a Rolex watch is, sadly enough, considered as currency. They weren’t specifically after a Rolex or ...

I've also seen many Instagram videos of people's watch being pry off their wrist...

 By: Clueless_Collector : August 26th, 2020-14:15
especially the hype watches. Yes, those are hot and dangerous, very liquid.

Totally. My mother's Rolex was pulled off her wrist while traveling with a big group in Rio - now she wears a fake Daytona 🙄

 By: Fastwong : August 26th, 2020-16:56
Not sure if that helps, doesn't make it any better to get shot for a fake Rolex instead of a real one...

Wow, sorry to hear that and hope your mom is ok and recovered from that scary experience...

 By: Clueless_Collector : August 26th, 2020-19:30
I have to agree with redcorals that wearing a fake Daytona may be worst....as Daytona is more desirable for the burglars.

It won't take long to happen in other parts of the world if the watch collecting mania keeps going hotter and hotter...

You just gave me an idea 💡

 By: Clueless_Collector : August 26th, 2020-18:25
Put a small tracking device in every watch, make the case back difficult to open unless special tools by MFG only. That way, it will solve many problems 👍🏻👌🏻

anything magnetic will interfere with movement. LVMH started doing it with some merchandise to prove

 By: redcorals : August 26th, 2020-18:29
authentication etc. Its just a tiny RFID sticker. Nike+ too experimented on similar lines for tracking steps etc. But why not blockchain

I've worked with brands looking at NFC/RFID and blockchain as a combo for authentication and chain of custody verification. Unfortunately, anything physical can be replicated, including a $.05 RFID chip which is where this all falls apart.

 By: Fastwong : August 26th, 2020-19:26
Add in a blockchain solution on a physical good whose chip can be replicated and all you end up with is multiple items getting added to the chain. If you can spot implausible additions (e.g. two of the same item scanned at the same time in different parts...

If it's time for me to go, something will happen regardless. Things always snap back when it reaches the extreme end. Regardless, it's still worth to be cautious and lower that probability since the "predator pool" has increased.

Sad state of affairs indeed Raymond. I have seen and know victims of these watch crimes. 2 words my friend, "WRIST CONDOM" 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

 By: holdemchamp1225 : August 29th, 2020-11:35
All we can do is protect ourselves and our loved ones. To do that, unfortunately we will have to make sacrifices or do things that are not comfortable but they have to be done nonetheless. 🤦‍♂️

Ok my friend, wear our “wrist condoms” 🤣

I used to travel to Europe for watches events and brought 5-6 watches for both me and my wife. It will be quite a hassle to bring all documents with me but oh well, we’ll see. Take care my friend.

My pleasure Raymond. You don't actually have to bring all the documents with you...

simply just scan them and save them to your phone as evidence. I would also recommend making a short video before every trip of the watches you wish to bring with timestamp and date to show proof that they are in your possession prior to your trip. I know...
