To be fair, a vast majority of those protesting wore appropriate protection.
In NY and elsewhere, there wasn't data to show protests led to an increase in infection. Social gatherings without protection, however, are a different story.
Maybe, but that wasn't the message at the time, and these are after-the-fact justifications. And no scientific evidence that masks meaningfully work.

Failures of leadership across the board, no doubt.
And everything has become so politicized (has been for a while), seriously hampering rational argument and decision making. Such a shame.
