IWC WWW, it can be a minefield

Jan 28, 2019,04:49 AM

(no pun intended) as stated by W154.

Here are a couple of photographs of my IWC WWW which is supposed to be a good, original example. They show the correct 'F' and 'S' engraved on the balance cock. It also has the original crystal which has crazed over the years. The dial (although original) has had the radium lume replaced with the MOD minty green and is not good as the one posted by amanico, which is truly wonderful.

Since these photographs were taken, the watch has been properly cleaned, serviced, and now keeping great time The case holding screws were changed (as one was missing) and I am glad to say, the timing regulator is now much closer to the centre, rather than being hard over to the 'S'.

Kind regards,
Bob S

A nice IWC military watch: the WWW, from the dirty dozen.

 By: amanico : January 27th, 2019-14:31
So called the dirty Dozen, because 12 brands issued watches for the British Army just after the second World War. IWC is part of them, as well as Omega, Record, Cyma, Grana ( the toughest to find ), Jaeger-Lecoultre, Longines to quote some of them. 35 mm ...

I think you should collect the full set ! [nt]

It’s not a hard task for a man of your abilities [nt]

Did you see the prototype Smiths Navigator (Mark 11) that sold last week ?

 By: W154 : January 28th, 2019-01:07
Very rare and intetesting, but I suppose less cachet than IWC or JLC and maybe only for hardcore anglophiles.

No! Too bad I didn't see it! [nt]

 By: amanico : January 28th, 2019-01:09

Well it wasn’t cheap. Original estimate £50-70 and sold for north of £15000 !

 By: W154 : January 28th, 2019-01:36
And whilst I did bid (to a mere 100x estimate), it probably deserved to go to a museum. I think it’s only the third known example. ...

Yes it did :-) [nt]

Yours??? [nt]

 By: amanico : January 28th, 2019-02:46

No, but that was fun for a few minutes 🤭 [nt]

 By: Cpt Scarlet : January 28th, 2019-03:05

I’ve read that it was won by James Nye, author of “A Long Time in Making: The History of Smiths”

 By: W154 : January 28th, 2019-03:15
And it will ultimately be donated to the Clockmakers’ Museum. There a lot of interesting material over on the MWR forum for anyone who’s interested.

Thanks, I will read that. [nt]

Damn you! You caught me, indeed. [nt]

Thanks for looking, my friend. [nt]

Love the dial and large diameter, easy to use crown

 By: JohnFM : January 27th, 2019-16:29
What do you think this dial looked like new? I can't tell how much of what I'm seeing is original vs. age-related.

I’d say it a very nice original dial. The main age related change is the transition to brown.

 By: W154 : January 27th, 2019-20:50
I’ve got a handful and also a small stash of parts, and to find an original dial nicer than the one above would be hard. Originals have often lost the radium and been relumed in the “famous” MOD minty green, or changed completely to MOD service dials. Her...

I don't see it as redialed at all. [nt]

 By: amanico : January 27th, 2019-22:55

Yes the dial in the original post is fantastic and entirely original

 By: W154 : January 27th, 2019-23:45
Looking back maybe it wasn’t clear what I wrote. It was pretty early in the morning after all ! The other three dials above are also original, but only the left one retains its original radium lume. The other two are relumed, with the middle one being a c...

I perfectly got what you perfectly wrote. ;) [nt]

They’re fantastic watches packed full of character.

 By: W154 : January 27th, 2019-20:36
But it can be a minefield to find all original examples in good condition. The example you show is beautiful but an original balance cock should be engraved F/S, and I think this one says A/R which would mean it’s been replaced at some point. As a realist...

Just to add another reference point to the thread, if you have an example that you feel is too far gone and send it back to Schaffhausen for a full refurbishment, then you’ll get back something like this (which was done in 2015). I’ve seen pictures of how...

Looks good!

but perhaps too good. Hello W154, Originality is key, to me. These old watches have hard lives and the 'factory fresh' look does not sit easily with me. But, each to his own and I don't have a problem with that. Kind regards, Bob S

Yes, luminova for sure.

 By: W154 : January 29th, 2019-01:23
I don’t imagine any original IWC WWWs look like this in the dark. ...

This is nice :-)

Regret not buying. You should pick up a Cyma. It’s 38mm and sits very nicely on the wrist

The Cyma is great, and generally considered one of the better options for a first “dirty dozen” buyer.

I had to let some watches go last Autumn and mine went then. It’s the one I regret most... ...

IWC calibre 83 'INCA'

 By: kjkt3 : January 29th, 2019-01:03
Wearing the Breguet Type XX too often, yesterday I put on the 18kt IWC calibre 83 (with 'INCA' printed on the seconds sub-dial). Sold on 18 December 1945 in Stockholm - obviously, I have the extract from the IWC archives - I like to think that it was boug...

Will try. :-) [nt]
