Need advice - 1971 watches

 By: JMan : November 12th, 2022-22:28
Folks: Long time lurker. Looking for advice on how I would go about understanding watches that were for sale in 1971. I figured reading some Watch magazines from that year would give me a good understanding. What Watch magazines were around at that time? ...

Here is one.

It used to be possible to see old IWC catalogues on their collectors' website.

It was necessary to join the website, which I think did not require a purchase. However, recently much of the useful information there seems to have been taken down.

Thanks

Thanks for the suggestion.

Welcome! I think it's important to keep in mind there's a difference between watches that were "for sale in 1971" and watches that were "introduced in 1971". Most watches for sale in 1971 were produced in the years prior.

For example, the original owner of my Heuer Carrera purchased the watch new in 1972, but it had been sitting in the showcase for a few years.

Good distinction

I was thinking about what was introduced in 1971 for the first time. Appreciate the tip.

If you're looking for "made" in 71

Or introduced in 71? If you're looking for a birth year watch, For "Introduced", Europestar archive is the easiest way, or if one of the members has catalogs from that time, Fort "made", it's much harder as not all brands manufacturing time are identified...

Instead of magazines, I would suggest hunting for these books:

1. James M Dowling and Jeffrey P Hess. The Best of Time. Rolex Wristwatches. An Unauthorized History. 2. Anton Kreuzer. Omega Designs. 3. Fritz von Osterhausen. The Movado History. 4. Benno Richter. Breitling: the History of a Great Brand of Watches. 1884...
