What are you: An enthusiast or a collector?

 By: xxcesar : August 24th, 2022-18:07
For the longest time, I ecplictly considered myself a watch enthusiast, not a collector. But as of late, this has at least partially changed, will be interesting to see, where I‘ll end up. So, what is the difference? An enthusiast is a normal person, who ...

So the three on the bottom aren't the same 🤣😁

 By: TeutonicCarFan : August 24th, 2022-18:16
I am in enthusiast mode still, but that always may evolve!

Good point!

 By: amanico : August 24th, 2022-20:34

Perfectly said

 By: Aquaracer1 : August 24th, 2022-23:45
😂

Excellent analogy....

 By: InHavenPro : August 24th, 2022-18:20
and no, I was always firmly 'planted' on the enthusiast side of things, not just as it relates to watches, but any product in general.... My chain of thought is precisely how you hypothetically delineate in your post, and I'll never have more than 7-8 hig...

Nice collection!

Enthusiast

 By: Cookies : August 24th, 2022-18:31
I can’t afford to be a collector. But friend and family know me as a collector. I look in the mirror and no answer comes back. An existential question which I cannot figure out, or will try to anymore.

I'd consider myself an enthusiast who collects

 By: andrea~ : August 24th, 2022-18:53
To me it has never been about the hoarding, but about gaining a deeper knowledge of horology, mainly within my favorite brands. Right now I'm pretty focused on my two biggest mechanical love affairs: Omega and JLC. I strive to always learn more about them...

Obviously, yes. ;)

 By: amanico : August 25th, 2022-08:15

Stopping is impossible when it comes to the favorites

 By: Weems@8 : August 24th, 2022-20:58
Favorites are forever. In my case there are watches, cheap and very expensive that do me nothing. There are watches that the matter the price, i will go to get them. Lucky me i am not a Patek Philippe freak, so that a dream not can come tru. Easier with L...

I agree with you!

 By: andrea~ : August 24th, 2022-21:02
I'm not a Patek guy either, and luckily my favorite brands are not the super expensive ones.

I guess I’m on the enthusiast side as well

By: Chronometer (aka yacomino) : August 24th, 2022-19:09

I guess I am going the other way around

 By: VinnieD : August 24th, 2022-19:53
Going from collector to enthusiast. I keep a very small collection of 4 watches, 3 of which have been gifted to me, and 2 of which I have selected. I only have one watch that I bought myself, and I will likely sell it soon. Trimming down my footprint if y...

That's a good balance, I find

 By: andrea~ : August 24th, 2022-21:05
When you get too carried away with collecting and set too strict of a rule you don't end up enjoying the journey as much As I'm still a young collector, with just a few years of experience, I'm only now starting to realize how this is the best way to go, ...

And for many people!

 By: amanico : August 24th, 2022-21:06

The picture you used

 By: Weems@8 : August 24th, 2022-20:37
I confirm you are an enthusiast. Simple by the way you show here IWC’s. This brand is famous by movements and collectors are focussing on status brands. The more their watches increase in value, the more they collect. I have my thoughts they can not enjoy...

I think perhaps it’s too limiting to strictly define or categorize your watch journey.

 By: BigAppleBill : August 24th, 2022-21:33
Tastes evolve. Simply buy and wear what you love. The rest takes care of itself.

You are certainly a collector of IWC!

 By: CH Gruyère : August 24th, 2022-21:42
I only have three of those.

The more I see this post and definition, I finally can wake up and call myself an Enthusiast 😂👍🏻👏🏻

 By: Clueless_Collector : August 24th, 2022-21:59
I will most likely never collect watches that seem redundant or similar.

Your collection is vast

 By: Cookies : August 25th, 2022-08:12
Hehehe…i see you more like a collector. Glau is definitely a collector because he collects enamel Pateks.

Jack of some trades and Master of none 😅

 By: Clueless_Collector : August 25th, 2022-14:23
That’s how I see myself. Thanks for your kind words bro.

if you get tired of any of your amazing selection, I will be more then happy to buy it from you...

By: Chronometer (aka yacomino) : August 25th, 2022-20:59
How about that green dial Daytona - hehehe

Haha…I’ll take note of that but don’t hold your breath 😅

 By: Clueless_Collector : August 25th, 2022-22:01
Here’s to tempt you some more. This is my one and only YG Rolex so if I get another YG, I’ll think about it 😜 ...

Very similar you and I…enthusiast Omega x 5

☺️

 By: Gelato Monster : August 25th, 2022-09:07

I agree about the "insane" part. Ha ha!

 By: Moka-Tiger (Ron) : August 25th, 2022-14:05
First of all, i am a fan of IWC among other brands. I love your Big Pilot "collector's collection". As an enthusiast, I had to choose THE one and ONLY Big Pilot that I wanted to add to my collection, because I didn't have a pilot watch. I knew mine had to...

Oh no! You just called crazy! I'm a collector...

 By: patrick_y : August 25th, 2022-19:17
For some things, like fountain pens, I literally have two of the exact same model in the same body size, same color, same nib size. The only difference being the serial number. Am I nuts? According to your post, I'm crazy!

Well

 By: xxcesar : August 25th, 2022-21:53
Hope you are not offended, I was mostly talking about myself + without a bit of positive crazyness, it would be a boring world.

Also

 By: xxcesar : August 25th, 2022-21:55
My primary collection is sneakers, there I often have two pairs of the same model, one to stock, one to rock…

I agree. One to stock, one to rock is very logical to me...

 By: patrick_y : August 25th, 2022-22:29
I think the same thing about pens and watches and sneakers! I've got a lot of identical sneakers. There's one I consider my "uniform" sneaker.

Not offended (I was joking).

 By: patrick_y : August 25th, 2022-22:28
And yes! Without a bit positive craziness, it would indeed be a very boring world! Thank you for making our world more exciting!

Tell me

 By: xxcesar : August 26th, 2022-05:25
My grail pairs are the asics koi and the mars yard - what are yours?

Oh! My tastes are far simpler and cheaper...

 By: patrick_y : August 26th, 2022-08:59
I've always liked the Lanvin DBB1 sneakers. That's my uniform sneaker.

😎👊

 By: xxcesar : August 26th, 2022-11:22

Aaah, and yes, then there are fountain pens

 By: Moka-Tiger (Ron) : August 26th, 2022-16:31
In some of my fountain pen collection . I have different colors and different nib sizes of the same model. Very interesting read, this fun thread, thanks for starting it.. It's fun to compare and see how some of us have the same style of collecting and th...

Let's not get started on fountain pens

Or HiFi...like how many amplifiers do you really need!?!

How about a tube amplifier to clean the electricty source for the incoming electricty that powers the system?

 By: patrick_y : August 26th, 2022-21:42
I've seen an audio system with a vacuum tube amplifier set up that's designed to only clean the electricity that is powering the system!

Well of course

 By: Gregineugene : August 27th, 2022-17:30
The thinking goes that if the incoming power isn't clean how can the outgoing signal be clean...hence a power scrubber is de rigueur in stereophile hifi. My strategy to combat the equipment arms race has been to grow older so that I can no longer distingu...

Hmm... That's a good idea!

I should close my eyes when I go into hotel rooms. This way I might not see how dirty those hotel rooms are.

Yes, Patrick!

 By: Bounce781 : August 26th, 2022-19:20
You are nuts! But that doesn’t mean we love you any less 💓😉😂

Aww. Thank you!

 By: patrick_y : August 26th, 2022-21:41
It's nice to be accepted, even with my flaws!

No flaws!

 By: Bounce781 : August 27th, 2022-00:26
“Endearing imperfections” 😉💓

Aww! I'm touched!

 By: patrick_y : August 27th, 2022-19:51

By the definition presented, I suppose I’m an enthusiast.

 By: RabidManatee : August 25th, 2022-22:29
Instead of acquiring more than one iteration of the same watch but for finishing, I’d prefer to find the better (to me) iteration and let the other go. However, I don’t consider all Explorers to be the same watch, so I’d gladly have a “vertical” with a 10...

Collection drives me nuts!!!

 By: Motty : August 26th, 2022-02:51
Well I’m a enthusiast for sure, as I stay away from having the exact same watches, and exact same brands! Here is the thing, when I started looking into the Rolex explorer II, that’s when the collecting part came up, I started my research and diving deep ...

Enthusiast

 By: Gregineugene : August 26th, 2022-06:14
...

I thought I was a collector until I read this post.

 By: montecristo#2 : August 27th, 2022-02:42
Now I realize I’m an enthusiast.

I love this post!

 By: Jim14 : August 27th, 2022-16:35
Particularly when you start in on the distinctions that a collector will make: the font on the box is different so I had to add this one to my collection! Laugh out loud at that one. I have thought about this just as we all have and one of the things that...

Collector here for sure...

 By: Dave G : August 28th, 2022-08:52
I have bought more than one of a specific model many times. Sometimes a different dial or case material or both. A lot of seasmasters and speedmasters, GMT's, explorers and Daytonas as well belo Some slightly more obscure collection pairings below: A pair...
