There are other good ones out there, but these two are the most popular and approved by multiple watch manufacturers.

I saw a watch winder advertised this morning where the watch laid flat on the winder and rotated in a flat circular motion. Can this position effectively wind a watch?

I think so, it depends a bit on the watch

but most rotors turn around an axis that's perpendicular to the face of the watch, and located in the center, so why not? I would think the manufacturer of the winder would have proven it to work before selling it. Perhaps there might be some issues of ef... 

I would skip the winder all together.

Every watchmaker I have talked to says that winders are a bad thing. Keeping a watch on a winder constantly is like keeping your car in idle 24 hours a day. It may be warm and ready to go when you drive it but is that good for the car?? Mechanical watches...

I believe traditional cam and lever perpetual calendars need to be kept on winders. They all have multiple correctors and (my personal experience) using those correctors constantly to set the calendar could be quite a dangerous proposition. The worst case...

I own multiple collector cars and have them all plugged to an advanced trickle charger that maintains the battery through cycles. The same way, a good winder will rotate only a certain number of rotations a day but certainly not ‘24 hours’!! The SwissKubi...
