I don't know where this ad is from but there could be various reasons the person is selling it. Even though the price is steep.

Sometimes you think you love a watch and after you get it you realize it's just not for you. Another thing is these days plenty of people "flip" watches so they are able to experience different brands, complications, styles etc...

Something Sad

 By: drphileasfogg : March 7th, 2017-15:48
I knew this was coming but I did not think it will be so quick......

I saw that on the reseller's site last week

 By: Joepny : March 7th, 2017-15:59
it disappeared and then came back. Yes sad that someone, who possibly had inside track to the limited watch, did not really like it enough and for sure there are others who could have loved it and kept it. And now a 33% markup. About 2 weeks of ownership....

Interesting. [nt]

I have seen 2 Pt versions being sold in pre-owned website for less than this amount...

 By: Clueless_Collector : March 7th, 2017-16:27
and that was not long, like 6~12 months ago. This Pt version should be very limited as well, one that is high on my list but after seeing 2 showing up for sale so soon, I am having doubts about this watch, in any metal, not sure what's not right. If this ...

It's a lovely piece

 By: Joepny : March 7th, 2017-17:03
in any metal. I would prefer the Pt version. I would compare this VC against the PP 5170 and the ALS Dato. Really a matter of taste what one likes most, if ignoring the price points, and for me the PP and ALS would rank higher.

That's a steep asking price for that steel watch

Nevertheless; there is always a buyer, you just have to meet him.

I don't know where this ad is from but there could be various reasons the person is selling it. Even though the price is steep.

If the person didn't like it, they could have sold it to the next person on the "list"...

 By: Tavio_George : March 8th, 2017-13:20
...I'm sure Hodinkee would have facilitated the transaction vs having it show up for sale. Just my thoughts.

Nice piece but cost is crazy for this piece in steel.

 By: descartes1 : March 7th, 2017-18:42
Also not sure how I feel about the branding. It's not as if it's a double stamped Asprey, Tiffany or something. I'd probably prefer it without the branding, whatever the cost. Regarding the quick sale, the skeptic in me wonders if this is being orchestrat...

Questions for the Future

 By: Ammerix : March 8th, 2017-04:36
After 20 years -- What is or was Hodinkee? Answer: a famous blog-site turned into a watch shop on the Internet. After 50 years -- What is a blog-site? After 100 years -- What was the Internet? After a couple of hundred years I hope that at least a few exa...

Or, you could just wait a month or so.

 By: zabreg1 Mr White : March 7th, 2017-20:07
Since VC will be making this watch themselves, albeit without the HODINKEE print.

+1 on that note! :) [nt]

+1 on this! [nt]

Would not surprise me at all

 By: alphabeta81 : March 8th, 2017-07:40
Identical except blue dial instead of gray dial? And no co branding? (Zenith essentially did just this prior with slight dial changes). Would be a homerun!

I was told same gray dial.

This came from a Boutique source, so I can't be 100%.

I am sure they wouldn't just make 30+ pieces in steel.

 By: zabreg1 Mr White : March 8th, 2017-21:01
Much more likely, they gave them exclusivity just to drum up the interest. I must say, I am intrigued, as the Pt version is beautiful but not legible. The steel version is much more to my liking.

It is the same for several watches. Patek 5131, for example, is a stronger example. 5070P, as well. Then, some Rolexes.

Or even some JLCs, such as the Tribute To Polaris 1965 in steel, or for some years, now, the TT Polaris 1968. There are guys who bet, and who win or loose. Nothing bad with that.

My assessment of the situation is different.

 By: marcobermann : March 8th, 2017-01:17
Hi all as this is now the resellers price I very much doubt the original owner saw any profit on selling his watch to them at all in fact I think he may of only managed to break even at best. He may not of bonded with the watch once on his wrist or faced ...

Unless the dealer bought it himself...

 By: andrewluff : March 8th, 2017-04:00
These watches are not necessarily sold to collectors, a bit like concert tickets being snapped up by touts and not real fans. I know a few collectors who buy pieces they don't want just to keep in favour with the brands/boutiques just to stay in favour an...

Good point Andrew

 By: marcobermann : March 8th, 2017-04:49
That was the one scenario I didn't think of, maybe it was the dealers watch to start with but I doubt we will ever know and only VC or Hodinkee would know due to the serial number. Anyway it will be interesting to see how long it takes to sell. Marc

The VC watch was a friends of Hodinkee release

 By: Joepny : March 8th, 2017-08:46
not really a general public release although it was constructed to appear that way. Good friends of Hodinkee like Eric Ku (on his Instagram) and Davide Parmegiani (confirmed via Edmond Saran) who are both prolific dealers themselves bought it. So quite po...

Insider benefits, exactly what the Hodinkee Insiders want.

 By: jmpTT : March 8th, 2017-11:21
Not too bothered. Last year we got the Montblanc 1858 Vintage Chronograph in steel. That watch has already become a de facto Purists Insider watch. Vacheron Constantine has entered the same market with a bit of showmanship and controversy. The limited rel...

You're right..

 By: TheMadDruid : March 8th, 2017-11:28
And still...who can criticize VC if they now discover a new market for a steel watch? My criticism is of Hodinkee and the game they play with their readers.

Yes very organic popularity with the MB 1858

 By: Joepny : March 8th, 2017-11:30
and everyone had the same chance as another, although we all know a certain Vlad was a driving force behind it. I swear...so many PuristS are posting cool pictures of the 1858 everyday that it is making me want to look for one of the sister refs...lucky t...

Stop!

You've reached your sales quota many, many months ago!!!

The price...

is just too crazy!

Of course Mario...

By: VintageAlex (aka AlexKontiki) : March 8th, 2017-16:46
The think is that it\'s a HODINKEE anniversary watch and to me that\'s why the price is just insane.

It's back

 By: marcobermann : March 16th, 2017-03:02
Well at least it is today and saying "ON HOLD" so it appears it may already be sold which means it didn't take long even with it disapearing for a few days. Marc

No longer collectible

New watches are not the big deal they were just a few years ago, no matter what the edition, it seems.
