John Harrison, A L Breguet and George Daniels at the London Science Museum

We took our daughter on a day trip to London and we visited the Science Museum. For those of you that haven’t been, I highly recommend it. The exhibits range from space travel and flight through to medicine and communications. However, of particular inter...

No problem, thanks.

I read the John Harrison book last year, it's excellent. I've never previously heard of this 'Space Traveller's' watch by G.D., but it looks fascinating.... Much appreciate the high quality photographs! Cheers, Filip

Thanks Filip.

I understand George Daniels made two Space Traveller’s watches. The first he was persuaded to sell but he missed it and so made himself another more complicated version, which is the one above. This Space Traveller 2 sold at auction, in 2017, for $4.3m. S...

Incredible collection!

Thank you for the preview Jon. GD is a genius, my Seamaster have his invention. While i like inventions, FC breaks the barrier with replacing the balance for a silicium disk. To mention John Harrison, as we are surrounded by satellites right now, he can b...

Movements and more

We all have a decent collection. I have the Co-Axial Omega, The FC monolithic, B&M Baumatic, A B&M with Selitta, A Longines with Eta, RT with Sellita to name who i measure accuracy. I am most proud of the Baumatic. A few seconds plus and a very long power...

Thanks for posting this.

Could you say a bit about the Nautilus with the co-axial escapement? That's new to me.

As i recall, George Daniels approached PP about the coax design...

PP turned it down, and so Omega took on the new design. PP offers many things that are not fully done in-house, and seems they want to keep costs down too as much as possible (a short two-year warranty for example). Love my Omega Speedy with coax movement...

Thanks.

I knew he approached PP but didn’t know a Nautilus was a prototype.

Yes, as enjoythemusic said, George approached a number of companies with the coaxial escapement, including Patek.

According to a Jack Forster article on Hodinkee about the Science Museum exhibition, Patek asked George to make various prototypes with the coaxial escapement and this Nautilus was the first wristwatch to have the coaxial escapement. Although Patek decide...

Thanks, appreciate that.

Wonder if they’re kicking themselves for not implementing it. Then again, as Thierry Stern once said of the calibre 324SC, if we wanted it to hack, it would hack.

That's true, and Panerai is also changing their movements to not include hacking seconds.

Perhaps it is to ensure higher reliability moreso than cost-cutting measures? Does anyone know with Patek is it the former or the latter?

Didn't know that. I'm a fan of being able to 'hack'.

I think patek just doesn't want to make it 'hack'.

Thanks for the reminder!
