Great topic

I was thinking about precisely this issue recently, when I looked at my regular rotation, and realised that my beaters were  all from the early 1950s. I work in an office (mostly) and try to ensure that I don't abuse them, but I did wonder about ageing. Of course the answer that appeals most is simply to reduce wear and tear by increasing the rotation regulars, although I suspect even so  I wouldn't be lowering the average age of the squad.

I do think that these watches were built to last forever, or close enough. I tend to the view that many of today's modern complications are designed within specified tolerances for performance rather than longevity and may not have the simple bullet proof quality of vintage pieces.

Vintage daily-wearer

 By: Baron - Mr Red : July 1st, 2013-04:59
It just occurred to me that so often what I love in vintage world is finding a piece that is both vintage AND wearable as a daily-wearer. Take my 5508 Sub, for example. I love the watch in so many ways. It is a classic vintage piece. However, I would not ...

I know it's vintage, but

it's a Rolex! Why wouldn't you take the watch in water, or wear in the rain? The watch is or should be the epitome of toughness. I don't follow vintage pricing, but are these vintage watches too expensive to justify basically normal (Rolex) wear? Are coll...

Uhm...not sure i agree...

I think the point I love about the 16660 is that it has all the trappings of a modern watch, but is actually 30 years old. As for being so pricey...well, I think the price of a 16660 could easily be found at levels comparable with a new Submariner. So, if...

i have several that would qualify as daily wearers

It's all about spare parts. To wear a vintage and potentially exclusive is nice but what happens, and believe me it happens, if you hit a wall with your vintage? I had several "unique" watches but I was not comfortable wearing any as a day-to-day wearer. ...

Even Omega, that is very popular here, has some parts that are scarce. Few weeks back, I helped another friend sourcing parts for his beloved Speedmaster 321 and he lives in US. Cheers, Nilo

I love to chase a watch but I'm not keen of parts hunt. A friend got a triple six in regular shape but the dial. He is still chasing and the few he could locate costs the ransom of a king! As I stated, it depends where you are. Cheers, Nilo

Well, view on the vintage daily-wearer...

... some are too important to wear daily, and some are really practically accurate and robust... One of my vintage daily-wearer/ beaters is this: Why this? Again, practical - meaning it is accurate (about +/- 5 sec per week) with day/ date, and the case i...

For everyday wear, reckon it has to be waterproof :-)

You make a perfect point Baron :- ) lovely watch you have. I'd say the ref. 16800 is also pretty much like a vintage daily-wearer

Those old watches are tough; go ahead and wear them.

Parts are available for Rolex, and if you don't wear a sports model you don't have to worry about messing up the bezel insert. Old IWCs can take care of themselves, and (when last I had it done) IWC did not charge an unreasonable price for refurbishing. A...

although, as many of you know, I am a convinced JLC fan, one of my true daily wearers, with some Vintage DNA ( almost, at least), has been and still is my Rolex Day Date , from 1980. She has been with me , many days and nights, in many countries, in the w...

I hear you, and I must agree that the Triple 6 is a great Vintage daily wearer.

......some of mine I just cannot wear for everyday. Take the 6610, the radium is notoriously fragile and easy to fracture. When I wear my 6610, I do so with a lot of care and certainly not when it could be exposed to any water. I cannot call it a daily we...

While I am happy to wear all my vintage watches for different occasions. The question of what I would turn to for a daily wearer is slightly different. I think Nilo raised perhaps the most important question for me which is spare parts and servicability. ...
