from the manual of the FPJ Chronometre Souverain.....

"Setting the time : Pull the crown in position 2 and wind it towards you to set the desired time. It is strongly recommended not to turn the hands anticlockwise."

I think this applies to all FPJ watches except my Elegante where setting is anticlockwise.

My source was the master watch maker at Patek Phillipes service department in Munich. He said its the "safe rule" as many watches don´t like the mechanism to go backwards....but what does he know... Im sure for some calibers its probably not important.

Watch setting

Is it always best to set a watch by adjusting the hands forward? Sometime ago I was told not to move the hands backwards.

Not with watches that comes with date function, I assume?

Or you’ll still go backwards if not past 12? I try to go only forward, unless it’s a time only watch.

I will go backwards only if there is no date function or complication...

...but I don't know if the actual mechanics are a problem or not...

Here is what a high end watchmaker told me:

"As with all mechanical watches there is a little backlash on the motion work of the hands, so it is advisable to set the hands backwards to the correct time." I notice for Breguet, the manual will tell you whether to set the hands forward or back dependi...

Well, there’s a conundrum.

Christian or the Pirate Cat?

Easy: Split the difference and never move the hands at all!

Actually, move the hands forward, but go an hour past the time, then move them backward to the exact time to set. Adjust this as needed to avoid breaking a QP and all's well.

😆

Completely fair,

My source is the watchmaker/owner of a high end independent, who gave the reason stated above and was speaking of a time only, obviously. My compromise, as stated above (either one, but the one in the body of the reply) is probably the precisely right ans...

Only time only

I would argue that time only watches are the only ones setting the watch backwards might be ok. For all other watches, I would imagine turning backwards might screw up the movement of not damage it. If you really want to do serious damage then take a a pe...

And in case the movement does not have a quick-set date?

Moving hands backwards was standard even for watches with a date complication .-) Except for perpetual calenders, of course.

watches with 'complications' read the operating manual

 By: golden hands : January 18th, 2022-20:15
always do research or read the operating manual for that movement calibre as there are many ways that by setting the 'complication' wrongly will be an expensive mistake.-(AM or PM must be known first) 3 hand watches time setting only can be set backwards ...

Depends on the watch. Read the manual.

Time only watches can sometimes be moved backwards. Time only watches can sometimes NOT be moved backwards (like most Tourbillons which are time only should not be moved backwards). Audemars Piguet recommends moving forward and then back one minute (if yo...
