For modern times the GF definitely is a stand out

Modern technology has allowed for the parts to be produced with precision. Which in turn has allowed these stunning timepieces to be created.

The rare violins have been brought up & I still find it amazing the craftsmanship that was able to be produced back in the day. Even the ultra complicated perpetual calendars with split seconds chrono and minute repater pocket watches are marvels considering the machines used to create certain parts where no where near CAD standard. Plus the watchmakers were creating the movements without computer software.

GF will be seen as a standout, as they went down the road of introducing more than one tourbillon in a watch and altering the number of revolutions it made.

I look forward to seeing what the future holds for watchmaking in general.

I see the Greubel Forsey (most basic one) as an iconic product

The comparison to it being a great violin is an illustration. It may as well be the volumes of Sherlock Holmes, great cars, the Apple products of Steve Jobs and et cetera. The big advantages are the 1 reliable life spans, 2 relevance they hold and retain ...

All the watches you mentioned are already masterpieces

i think all these watches, from MB&F to Romain Gauthier, are the state of the art, each watch with its own features. these are artwork, rare and just for few people. IMHO your comparison between GF to Stradivari was not right because stradivari probab...

Thank you...this is a POV I have missed 100%

I never thought of it. Sincerely appreciated.

Compare them to anything you want, except violins.

A 300-year old violin (the right one) does not derive its value from being art. It derives its value from being a tool that not only is state of the art but that is actually functionally superior to anything people are capable of making now. To be compara...

This is evidence that my working class background is real. Chuckles.

Sincerely, and totally appreciated comment. Just like above. I never played a violin, my wife does. This and the earlier POV made me think of the motivation behind the grandmasters of the pre industrial, pre electronic, pre consumerism age....people bough...

Passage of time? I wonder of the ability to afford such high end watches influences one's judgement as to its desirability?

Archangel Michael icon, ca 1300 Constantinople Sorry Ronald & Bernard, I couldn't resist. I saw this original last summer and it knocked me out. Cheers Cazalea ...

You are 100% spot on. I have always mentioned that I was working class. I couldn't put my finger on how to say it. You did. I am certainly not within the "can afford" or "the haves" group. It's just that I am a persistent and motivated saver. And because ...

Do you have anyone that depends on you? Or are you a "free" person when people retire in the USA?
