When Franck Muller is more understated than Patek Philippe?

Hello all, To scratch an itch for a watch that properly evokes the Art Deco style of 1920s Brazil, I boiled down the choice to the following: 1. Franck Muller Cintrée Curvex Chronometro ref. 5850 2. Patek Philippe Chronometro Gondolo ref. 5098 The choice ...

Both are gorgeous

I think the FM is more interesting and at that price point, I see why you went with it - congrats!

I prefer the case and bezel of the FM...

...but I do have a soft spot for shaped movements...

If only,

We take away the mass produced movement versus limited in-house movement, there is not much to discuss about in term of looks and design.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. FM's reliance on ETA movements has been as bone of contention for decades of course, and that is despite the additional work on the base.

Even then it doesn't come remotely close to the PP in this or pretty much any other instance. So I wouldn't begin to draw any comparisons on that count. As for 'master of complications,' well FM does deliver the occasional statement piece but for the most...

I like them both...

...even if to my mind they still stand in the shadow of the 1906 original: ...

But of course. There’s an apocryphal story that…

… Franck Muller’s penchant for the tonneau had a lot to do with the restoration work he did on vintage Cartier. The company has probably overdone it a little since then but I appreciate the fact that there are still watch companies today willing to work w...

Completely agree

What I thought, too.

Here is a qualified defence of FM's use of ETA movements from Francis Jacquerve, a former Design Manager at Longines. It was written about 8-10 years ago

QUOTE Angélus, Anton Schild, Cortébert, Fontainemelon, Frédérique Piguet, Kelek, Landeron, Peseux, Valjoux, Venus [...] were all companies focused on the design of movements and the production of blanks that brands would buy and refinish: incabloc or not,...

Both incredible and beautiful watches .

Lots of love for the tonneau case shapes . I have always had and still have a soft spot for the FM brand and like you said at the price point where you can pick them up nowadays its almost a no brainer imho . Ofcourse the PP is a amazing and gorgeous watc...

The FM journey is an interesting one. A watchmaker once (perhaps with a little exaggeration?) described as the most talented of his generation...

... then a watchmaking enterprise that began with some serious endeavour, morphing into some pretty outlandish directions. I was tickled by this watch because it now looks entirely understated compared with much of what FM now offers. It's not a brand tod...

On paper there's no competition. One watch is of a higher order of quality over the other.

The PP also uses some nice thin lugs, reminiscent of the wire-like fixtures of early wrist watches. The FM's lugless profile is much more contemporary - 1960s onwards perhaps? Regardless, I'm looking forward to the heft this one will offer owing to its so...

I had never seen this FM before, amazing similarities between the 2 !

The Patek's lugs make it more "vintage" in terms of style compared to the more modern integrated lugs of the FM. It is very true that FMs tend to depreciate at a vertiginous speed (compared to other brands and PP in particular), but his complicated watche...

Yes I see the difference in the 'lug work' too

FM has played into / suffered from (take your pick) its own turn in fortunes, although this may just be popular perception. It seems to be doing quite okay as a brand by its own account, with a clientele that's happy with its output. FM buyers aren't look...

Not bad
