The educational importance of the right sources

 By: andrea~ : July 16th, 2022-21:07
I've found that the key to having a deep knowledge of anything resides in the sources of information you decide to learn from. I personally always refer to a select group of people to inform myself: On YouTube the obvious answer is Tim Mosso: we all know ...

I still haven't been able to find him

 By: andrea~ : July 16th, 2022-22:22
What's his nickname?

Tim M.

Ha, nice!

Good to have sources outside of merely forums

 By: TeutonicCarFan : July 16th, 2022-21:35
A source I liked started maybe 10y ago was a go to for me. Now they seem to just have articles to have hot links into their store.

That's unfortunate

 By: andrea~ : July 16th, 2022-21:41
You can clearly see when a website decides to turn to a place to paste affiliate links and make money instead of giving out good information. It's a shame...

Everyday….I spend few times visiting these websites.

Look at my bookmarks 🤦🏻‍♂️😅 That’s how I stay clueless, lol. ...

;)

Yes, he has a wealth of knowledge on independents

 By: andrea~ : July 16th, 2022-22:23
You always see some incredible stuff on his channel

Agreed.

 By: amanico : July 16th, 2022-22:24

That's quite thorough!

 By: andrea~ : July 16th, 2022-22:23
Brand-specific sites like Langepedia are a must too!

+1!

He always has footage of JLC and Omega novelties

Peter Speake-Marin at The Naked Watchmaker

That's the place I find most interesting. Cazalea

Consolidating is useful

 By: Weems@8 : July 16th, 2022-22:07
When all are read, you end up at the one and only The Naked Watchmaker. CH24 for the rest, and WPS for entertainment and sharing the passion.

A lot of great ones out there

 By: mhz vph : July 16th, 2022-22:46
SJX and The Naked Watchmaker instantly spring to mind. For all the commercialism, there are great pieces on Hodinkee every once in a while, and some good ones in their archives. Small blogs can also be a great resource. One of my favorites: adventuresinam...

I didn't know about the last one

 By: andrea~ : July 16th, 2022-23:37
I'm going to check it out, thank you!

I like nearly all the resources mentioned so far. Some more than others. Here's one more.

Yes, Federico Talks Watches. He isn't going to educate us the way PSM does on the Naked Watchmaker "Making" series. But, he often provides perspective from a guy who is running and building a business, and seems pretty straight on which way's up. Entertai...

I recently went through a 30 page forum thread

On the omega forums about an issue with the 3861, figuring out what was wrong, and omega's solution. It was very enlightening! omegaforums.net

Very nice thread Andrea! I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet, as it's on a high level (scholarly, I would say) and is run by one of the best in the entire industry: John Reardon's "Collectability."

 By: FabR : July 17th, 2022-09:02
John (and his ever-expanding staff) are doing the best work today when it comes to popularizing vintage Patek timepieces, though lots of their articles concern the Brand in general, often with an insider's perspective: Home - Collectability | An education...

Collectability is awesome when it comes to Patek

 By: andrea~ : July 17th, 2022-10:33
It's always a pleasure to hear what John Reardon has to say

By including a link to a commercial site, is your post not a violation of terms of conduct?

 By: Steve E : July 17th, 2022-18:26
Sincerely interested in understanding the "boundaries".

Well, I really don't think so --- at least no more than the many links we regularly allow to a number of other watch sites that *also* include a commercial section (think of Hodinkee among all others, which is quite popular here ;-)

 By: FabR : July 17th, 2022-19:00
But let me add a good-faith statement to this reply, since while it doesn't even cross my mind to view Collectability as commercial, they do in fact *also* have a section of watches for sale: I do *not* have any affiliation with Collectability, nor am I *...

Thank you for the feedback.

What prompted my question was a thread that was locked earlier today, citing terms of conduct. I asked aboutl linking to dealer sites since it also falls under ToC rules, and sites engaged in selling activity are pretty clearly commercial sites; compellin...

Honestly I don't believe so

 By: andrea~ : July 17th, 2022-20:19
I haven't posted any links so it shouldn't be a problem.

Hi, my question was for Fabrizio.

 By: Steve E : July 17th, 2022-23:56
Excellent thread you started. Thanks.

Oops

 By: andrea~ : July 18th, 2022-07:32
Sorry, I didn't see that

These are familiar names to me also. And very true what you say, especially these days as there is a lot of noise on the internet (pretend experts, talking heads etc).

 By: Jay (Eire) : July 17th, 2022-13:00
Big fan of Steve H and his videos and podcast, and while I don’t watch Tim M’s longer form videos that much I do love the watch reviews. Two podcasts which I would add to this list, Minutia Repeater which unfortunately has only one series to this point bu...

The noise is plentyful indeed.

 By: andrea~ : July 17th, 2022-13:18
Unfortunately it seems like the watch media is saturated with so-called "experts" who only cover a few mainstream brands and offer no real depth. I'll check out your suggestions!
